Well, if we're contemplating replacing the US Army's longest-lived light arm ever issued, why restrict ourselves to the 5.56mm ? Smaller or bigger caliber, there's lots of choices and lots of innovations in both chemistry and its ballistics impact to explore. Perhaps another stab at the "caseless" round ? Or, to satisfy the "antis" a "plastic case ala the Dardik "Tround" ? >MW

They've been talking about replacing this thing for 40 years. Unfortunately, the people making the money off of it must be pretty influential. The least they could do is chamber it for a larger round.

Or maybe it's time to just replace the M4 with a
Luke Skywalker flashlight and appease not only the 'anti-gunners', but jobama's peaceful muslim buddies also. Don't you think they already have a handful of 'protos' that manufacturers have presented, recently and in the past? Must be a reason in someones wallet that they are even considering this.

Fantasy time, M1 Garand/M14 type rifle in .338 Federal with a 20 round magazine instead of the 8 round enbloc clip of the Garand.
![]() 6.5x55 or 300 Wby to the sniper types depending on the target.

Thinkin the ACR or the SCAR would be a decent replacement, not too particular on the pea-shooter and muskets I've been issued the past few years.
