I think the P22 might be a good choice fo rmy wife.
Do you have the 3.4" barrel or the 5", and do you know if the barrels are interchangable?

I have a Mosquito, and it’s served me well. Stick to Mini-mags, and you should have no problems. While Mini-mags might be 7 cents per round vs 4 or 5 cents per round of cheaper ammo, think about the cost of the ammo for your Colt .45. Then, 7 cents per round is nothing.

I have a Ruger Standard, and I am here to tell you that it’s a sweet shooting gun, but the mother of all battles field stripping and reassembling. The gun has a huge following. My father bought it brand new in 1950 for $37.50. First time I field stripped it (it took several attempts to get it apart) is when I started shopping for something more modern and easy to field strip. I held a P22 and Mosquito, and just liked the way the Mosquito felt in my hand. Didn’t care for the P22 at all, but that is one of those personal things that no one but you or your wife can make a decision on after holding them. You’ll probably be happy with either one. I also like Sigs, as I just purchased a Sig P220. I just like the feel of a good Sig in my hand.

Hey Gary,

I liked the Mosquito, but my wife preferred the P22. So its more her decision than mine. As for the Rugers, I've heard great things about them, but I just don't want to deal with something thats a big hassel to field strip. So I think Ruger is out of the running. But we still have several pistols to consider.

Over the years, I have introduced the shooting sport to many people who had never shot a pistol before. Everyone enjoyed shooting the P22, especially women. The P22 is user friendly, left and right. Little women with small hands have no problem handling it.

My P22 is extremely reliable with Mini Mags, but not so good with anything else. Unguilded bullets lead-up the barrel quickly and then accuracy is poor. In the P22, guilded Mini Mag .22's can be fired all day with accuracy and without issue.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice and experience. Surprisingly, my wife went with the Sig Mosquito. She found the Neos too heavy, the P22 she didn't like the slide release and she had a lot of trouble releasing it with just her thumb. She tried a Kel Tec, and liked the sites, but it was really stiff and hard for her to use. I figured its just new and needs to loosen up a bit with use. The down side to that was the ammo is more expensive. The Sig seemed light enough, she could rack it easily, and the slide release was easy for her. So thats what she went with.

Also thanks for pricing info Double D. Unfortunately, the dealers near me charge 10% of the gun's value for handling guns from out of state, plus a paper work fee etc...so on these less expensive pieces all the savings offered is lost in the paperwork shuffle and shipping. But maybe it will work out in the future on some other items.

Instead of the unreliable "plastic fantastics,' get a new or used Ruger standard. They're metal and are reliable. They are inexpensive for what you get and have dozens of after market add-ons. They have a bunch of different barrel lengths and types: Bull, tapered, fluted, slab sided, etc. Not as picky about ammo as the plastic ones and last forever. I still have Granddad's '53 Ruger Automatic pistol, and have bought every Mark since. The MKIII is very nice, though some don't like the mag dis-connect safety (doesn't bother me) they are good to go right out of the box, no changing springs. Take a look at what is available, or order one that strikes your fancy. Can't go wrong with a Ruger. TJ

Congratulations on the choice. There is a wealth of information on the Mosquito in a thread started by Mississippi Dave over on the SigForum. Dave is the forum guru on the Mosquito.

Sigs are lubed differently than most of the guns I’m used to. I did a video on lubricating the mosquito. It’s definitely my most popular video, and Mississippi Dave helped me with the details to make sure the video would be a source of good info.

P22 all all the way. Run bulk ammo with no issues at all. Great little gun. It also has great reviews vrs the Sig, which had some feed issues.

If you ever decide to pick-up a 22lr wheel gun, the single six is a good choice. Used ones run about 3 bills around here.

Browning buckmark UDX, the grip works for both sexes but women seem to prefer this grip. The gun also shoots very well.
