Default Sten Mark 3 History

I find the Sten Mark 3 to be a fascinating weapon system. Does anyone know more about the Sten Mark 3 and why they were demilled in the manner they were? Basically cutting the receiver tubing and leaving the other important components in tact. And what time in history most of these stens were demilled?
