Have a New England Arms, 12 GA 3 inch Model SB1 Pardner. Only had 5 rounds shot out of it. Every time I fire, recoil cracks open barrell? And if I place pressure on barrel and stock at same time, it self-cracks open. What faulty part needs to be replace or fixed. This certainly isn't normal and perhaps unsafe.

This is a common problem I have seen with new England arms. My buddy had to send his into thecompany 3 times to get it fitted correctly

Very very unsafe. Barrel latch is probably stripped, broken or not fully engaging the the lock lever or not fully engaging the barrel lug. Look at the lock lug on the barrel for marks, I bet the latch isn't fully locking to it and only catching the edge.

Strangely enough that is common and doesn't seem to be unsafe; the gun doesn't actually open until the pressure drops. It has to do with the angle of the locking block and the vibration set up by firing heavy loads. As long as the pressure is on, the gun will stay locked, then when the strain is off, it pops open.
I would return it since it is a current gun. If it were an older gun, a good shotgun gunsmith could probably fix it. Jim |

...I hate to stray away from the OT, but I have a Savage 24 J, O/U, .22WMR/20ga. that has done that very thing since I have owned it..doesnt matter if you fire the .22 mag or the shotgun, pops open...uhhhh, is this normal for the Savage?

I have fixed these guns (several) by removing a very slight amount of metal on the bbl lug which allows the locking block to come forward more. It is a rather delicate thing to do because that may not be your particular problem. I have also welded the lug and fitted it back tot he block which is a far more involved process. On a newer gun I would return it; repair should be free but for the cost of shipping to them and the hassle involved with that.
I haven't seen this prob with the Savage guns. |

This will also happen if one purchases an "unfitted" barrel and then uses it on the original frame. It is one of the reasons that NEF/H&R would not sell barrels unless the receiver was returned to the factory for fitting. NOT EVERY BARREL will do this - I have found 4 different ga. barrels that work as intended on a NEF Marlin era receiver - without factory fitting. Just lucky I guess.

Kempy, check this discussion:
http://www.go2gbo.com/forums//index....c,86700.0.html Also, 90% of the time, it's oil on the latch shelf that causes the problem. |

I was told by NEF that the bbl changes are now on only SB2 frames. There is also 2 prefix letters (1 in each number) in the front of the ser. no. that designate these frames but I don't recall right now what they were. And they absolutely refuse to do custom chambering........(just thought I would mention that).

Zane, I have a 24 J myself, never experienced this problem. If I were Kempy I would return the gun and have them replace or correct.

I was thinking this was a "normal" thing with them, as it's the first one I have owned. Going to get her out here next few days and see what's up. I know it sure doesnt/didnt seem right...shoot it and it break open.

My 24 J is an older one, mid 60's I think, bought it new. It was the deluxe with the silver receiver. Still have the original hang tag!
