Default Hello, new to the forum, 40 S&W question

I am new to reloading. I will be loading mostly 9mm, 40 SW, and maybe some .380. In looking at 40 SW load data from my powder website (Accurate No.2) and a couple of manuals, I see mostly load data for JHP and XTP bullets.

Has anyone loaded 40 SW using Accurate No. 2 and either Berry's or Rainier plated bullets? I will likely load 165 or 180 gr flat point bullets. For their plated bullets, Berry's recommends using low to mid range loads listed for jacketed bullets and Rainier recommends using load data for lead bullets.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I don't load .40's, I got rid of my only 40 a couple of years back. I do know that I've had no problems using jacketed data and keeping the velocities below 1200 with either Rainiers or Berrys, they're both quality bullets. I've even pushed some of the Berrys up to 1450 and had no issues with fouling. The main thing is to work up each load properly and observe everything; they'll work well for you.

I recently tooled up and started reloading 40 S&W. I would skip the Berrys and Rainier and go to the Jacketed bullets from Precision delta. In most cases the PD jacketed bullets are cheaper! Heres a link... http://precisiondelta.com/

Welcome. I had the same experience. I shot a lot of Berry's and Rainier in 9mm and loaded both with jacketed data, no problems.

OK. Thanks for the suggestions. Cabela's had Berrys' on sale so I ordered some of those yesterday. I will keep precision delta in mind for the next batch.

A local experienced reloader has been helping me get set up and provided some initial teaching. He supervised my reloading of some 9mm with Rainier 124 gr. and he did use the jacketed data (4.4 gr of Accurate No 2). I just reloaded more 9mm and (based on Rainier's recommendation to use recipes for lead bullets), I loaded some with 3.2, 3.4 and 4.0 grains for testing.

Now, in American Handgunner I read a question about using reloads in a 40 Glock. I don't have a Glock (too ugly ) but the editor noted that the Glock warranty is voided if reloads are used . I realize 40 is a very high pressure and fast ammo but, other than the normal attention to detail and following the appropriate load data, is there something exceptional about 40 that makes reloading more tricky than other calibers? I will be shooting with a Ruger SR40 (a lot better looking piece of metal than any Glock ).

a little much to type it all here, but Google " Glock unsupported chamber " and "Glock smiles" also take a look at Polyaganol rifling too. A few good hours of reading for you,

It's not just Glock, all gun manufactures state that in their owners manual.
