Is it OK to use a rigid cleaning rod on a new 10/22? And, is it OK to enter from the muzzle end? Please pardon my considerable ignorance.

Get yourself a "Bore Snake". They are just the ticket for cleaning when you can't access the breach with a rod.

You will love the boresnake until the string breaks while it's in the bore.... I did quite a bit of talkin to the Lord that day. I used to compete rimfire and I took a weedeater line and heated one end and pushed it flat against a pc of steel to flatten it, then sharpened the other end. I would push the sharp end thru the patch and run it down to the flattened end then dip it in the cleaner. Insert it from the breech and pull thru. A wet patch or two followed by a couple dry ones. I still use it.

Thanks all for your help. Just one thing...that dang barrel on this 22 is so tiny I can barely run the cleaning rod through. I am being careful so as not to damage inside. But, it is really tight.

Plus, I bought a Hoppe's boresnake for 22 caliber. It looks like its too big to fit through the barrel.

maybe someone else can help with rod? the boresnake as long as it says for .22 will be tight and it will go thru you have to tug a little goes from the breech 1st. if it went thru easily it would not clean the barrel properly

with a .22 a boresnake is all you will ever need as you do not have the copper buildup a centerfire rifle gets.
I only use the boresnake on my .22s, most all my centerfired get cleaned with proper fitting patches on proper rods from the breech end. Once in a while I will run a snake down the centerfires if im shooting an extended session...

Why is a bore snake any better than a standard cleaning rod with brushes and swabs?

Dewey does make a bore guide for the muzzle of the 10/22's & 77/22's .
![]() http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pi...ls_w_Frt_Sight They also make them for the heavy barrel (.915"-.925") 10/22's. They make them for M-14's / M1A's as well. Much better than taking a chance on screwing up your crown. Art

Dont know if they are better but they sure make cleaning easier. You can add Hoppes or CLP to the snake. I add Hoppes in front of the brush and Clp to the rear of the snake.

not better.. just as good.. on .22 rimfires... but where the boresnake shines is it brushes and patches all in one pass. And on a .22 rimfire all thats ever in the bore is powder residue and lead fouling which gets taken out within one or 2 passes of a bore snake rather than 4 or 5 passes with a rod, brush, and patch...

I tried the boresnake....worked great! What a difference from trying to run a rod, jag, and patch repeatedly through the barrel. I put a little Ballistol in front of the brushes, and a little oil on the end. So much easier. Now I can start to break in the new barrel. Thanks everyone for all the good info. You are all awesome.
