Right now nearly half of my pistol collection are 1911s, I have 7 of them, and I shoot them well. As my eyes are old and tired, all of my shooting is at 10 yards or less and I'm really in my comfort zone with the JMB masterpieces. Over the years I've owned a number of Glocks but TBH I've never had one for very long as I never shot them well. Recently I picked up my latest Glock on a trade - the very large G34 which is apparently the darling of lots of competition shooters. As I have been toying with shooting steel or USPSA, I figured one of these would be a good gun for it as they are cheap, tough, and reliable (and I got a bunch of mags with the gun).
This morning I threw the Glock in the range bag with 150 rounds of ammo and if nothing happens I'm hitting the range after work to try it out. The goal is to actually shoot this one even close to as good as I shoot my steel guns - a daunting challenge for me based on past performance...

Good luck. I know glock lovers everywhere will swear on their accuracy, but I personally disagree. I wouldnt trade one 1911 for 3 brand new glocks. But, thats why we all have opinions. I hope you find out different. Have a good time at the range!

And no, I didn't trade a 1911 for it - that would be sacrilege...

I traded for a Glock once. Didn't like anything about it. Traded it for a 1911.
Which was later stolen.![]() |

I do own one Glock but do not like it. I let my Son use it as his duty weapon. He seems to love the thing. Why, I don't know. We went to the range together a couple of weeks ago and I still could not hit anything with it.

Glocks are for men who can't handle a 1911.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was down in Texas a couple of weeks ago and went to the range where one of my sisters is taking courses to get her carry permit. Every instructor there is pushing Glocks - I think they must get a commission on 'em. I have fired a few and really can't see what the big deal is - IMHO, a lot of hype. I have a Ruger P95 that's all the 9mm I need and I haven't had a single problem with it. BTW, driving back through Texas I saw a bumper sticker that said, "I DON'T NEED VIAGRA, I'VE GOT A COLT .45". I swear, I almost drove off the road I was laughing so hard...

Got a kick out of that one and I have 7 1911s.
I like variety and I think a real shooter should be competent with any type of pistol. While I carry a 1911 and probably practice more with them, I also want to be a decent shot with the Glock so I'm going to give it some time. I also work with my Sigs regularly so I stay proficient in the DA to SA transition. The fun in having a varied collection is I get to practice with a lot of different pistols and I stay at least "decent" with all of them. Wasn't able to hit the range this afternoon so that will be tomorrow's task...

My sister called last night; she bought a Glock 19 yesterday.
She's a petite little thing, so I can't blamer 'er for not going with the .45. I'm just glad she's armed and taking it seriously.

Yup, had a 26 about a month ago for exactly a day. I did buy it just to use as trade bait though. I finally got the G34 to the range and while I shot it much better than other Glocks I've tried - this one wasn't for me either. Traded it yesterday for another classic Sig...

![]() I did something similar recently. As you know I have 1911itis. Well, my cousin got a 1911 Commerative Edition Thompson/Auto-Ord, you know its one of those Gold covered things that make you want to vomit from America Remembers that cost $2,000 and you can't sell it for $400. He got it on the cheap for the aforementioned reason but he hates it. He said it shoots like crap and he can't carry it (too big). So we went to the range and its shoots pretty good, its not a Colt, but its not bad either. He just isn't great with the GI sights. He was still ticked off and wanted to go the other route and buy a NAA 22 mag (another with crap sights and hard to shoot ). So, I offer him a trade. One of my extra S&W J frames for the Thompson. I gave him a S&W model 60 .357 (I had 3, two in 357 and one in 38) and I took this:

Its the old Auto Ordinance. It fires well with FMJ but it refuses to fire a hollow point.

Well I broke down and purchased my first striker fire gun this Spring. It is a Glock 19. I just finally wanted to experience what all the talk has been about for these many years. Other than a couple failures to eject on the very first magazine it has functioned flawlessly with factory and my reloads. I have slightly less than 500 rounds through it so far but I have to say I like this pistol. I like the feel and "pointability" and it is about the easiest gun to get used to I have ever had. I can regularly bang the 8" steel plate at 25 yards off hand and when I don't it was obviously my fault. My carry gun has changed over time and is presently a Ruger LCR but I would feel quite comfortable if I carried this little Glock. Problem is some friends have suggested that my hands and arms are taking on a sort of square blocky appearance.

Over 20 years ago I purchased an AO 1911A1 that wouldnt feed anything but ball. EVER. Apparently it had done this out of the box, and the owner, a LEO gave it to another LEO friend of ours, who also lived in our same neighborhood, who offered to throat it and polish the feedramp. Damned thing still wouldnt feed anything but ball. That is atleast part of the reason that I managed to buy it as cheaply as I did.
Anyhow, $15 for a used VN-era GI barrel (because the other self proclaimed gunsmith had bitched the original up pretty bad) and off to a DIFFERENT LEO friend of mine, who polished the feedramp and throated the GI barrel properly. I still have the original AO mag someplace, not sure where, but to this day, I carry it ONLY with McCormick Shooting Star 8 rounders, and it will feed ANYTHING I give it, right side up, up side down, "TV Gangsta Sideways" (lol), wadcutters, hard lead, soft lead, hollowpoints, magsafes, etc etc. Its been a fantastic pistol and will surely outlive me. |

I bought a new Glock 17 for the wife for Xmas... it shot OK for the first 200 rounds, then the slide started jamming open...no hot loads, no abuse... Sent it to the Georgia facility... they wanted $ 115 for a new barrel.... asked them to fix it under warranty.... they still have it, 6 weeks later....The only thing that sucks more than their POS pistol is their CSR....Buddy let me shoot his new Springfield Armory 1911 .45.... paid what I paid for the G17....Now THERE is a pistol worth having....

First, sorry for the Hijack NGIB.
![]() I figure the A/O will just be a range piece anyways. I usually carry my Kimber TLE or one of my Colts:

I seen that happen to a USP45 once. Owner shot a squib, then fired another round behind it. Bulged the barrel and caused it to jam about every third round. Owner had the pay HK for a new barrel. That is the number one reason why I can think of a new barrel would be needed. There is two sides to every story and I bet there is a reason why they want $$ for the repair, because something like a reload caused the problem. Just a thought, nothing more. |

No DD, they are either Win. or Rem. 124gr FMJ. I was aware of their position on lead and they, along with most of the manufactures, don't recommend reloads of any kind and I understand where that is coming from. I figure a good, careful, reloader can make as good a round as the factory. I don't reload lead in anything but the revolvers any more. Even the 1911 get jacketed or plated rounds. But thanks for the warning to the old geezer, he appreciates it.

For a polymer pistol, I think H&K is ten times better.

HK are fine pistols forsure. I have seen them KB in 40 and 45 though, well atleast after they Kb'd.
Forget about good CS though, I owned one at one time and getting parts or any kind of service is as bad as Kimber. If you tell them you have a problem, there is not freakin way one of their products are faulty and they will flat out tell you that. I aint a huge fan of S&W autoloader pistols, but S&W has the best CS I have ever seen, I would own 2 M&Ps for the same price of one HK anyday! Glock also has spectacular CS. A huge consideration I look at when I get a pistol. One of my buddies has half a dozen HKs and I like them all, and yes I do believe they are 'better' than Glocks, but the extra price aint worth it when Glocks are just barely less of a pistol for soooo much less money.. JMO. |
