I have a 44-40 Colt SSA, 7 1/2, made in 1883. At some point it was rebarreled with a Christy barrel and I suspect the cylinder is also a replacement as it is stamped 44-40. Interestingly, the trigger guard bears the stamp 44CF so the motivation wasn't to change the chambering. Maybe the owner wanted a different barrel length or it was just worn out. Anyway, it now locks up tight and shoots fine. It was reblued, of course, and lacks original grips.
So it's just a shooter, but what's it worth?

If the frame was reblued as well, I would guess a 1000 to 1200. That doesn't mean someone might pay more for it. If the frame still shows 50% case colors and not blued it could bring 15 to 18 hundred. Keep in mind this is just an educated guess.
Pictures could change my mind in either direction. Ron Last edited by muddober; 04-29-2011 at 09:12 PM.. |
