Hercules 12 gauge break open, forend attach. prob.
Hey folks, this is an old Hercules break open 12 gauge Iím working on, sold by Monkey Wards. I think it was made by H&R. I havenít worked on a lot of shotguns and I havenít yet seen one of these for end assemblies complete and in working order. This one was completely mudded together with epoxy and glued to the barrel. Now that all the epoxy is cleaned out of it I can see the tension spring on the little hanging piece is broke. Iíll call it piece ďXĒ until someone here schools me. My assumption is the epoxy was a hillbilly alternative to replacing the spring, but as Iíve said, Iíve only dealt with these in various stages of unrepair where I literally had to make my own attachment. Iíll have no problem scrapping this and making a good solid attachment of my own that will outlast the original but I prefer the natural repair if possible. Anyway I imagine that spring would push piece X away from the barrel therefore pulling the middle of the assembly toward the barrel, however the spring itself is obviously far too light to hold this assembly in place by itself. What am I missing here? Common sense tells me replacing that spring is a waste of time and money.
