Our club had a benchrest rimfire match last Sunday. We shot 25 & 50 yards on the USBR target: The Rimfire E-Mail Match course of fire. Our scores will count in the June E-Mail Match sponsored over on Rimfire Central.
I talked to some of the local shooters about your "take a picture of the target" match. We are thinking of having a "side match" at our next shoot on July 13th. The Side Match will be at 100 yards on the NRA 100 yard A-25 target: Same as the WalMart target with the 1 inch "X" ring and the 2 inch 10 ring. If your shooters would agree to use that target at 100 yards, we would like to participate in your "picture" match. In last Sunday's match we had 21 shooters. I can't say how many of these local guys would be willing to shoot at 100 yards in our July match, but some of us would like to enter our scores in your match, if we can all agree on the course of fire. What would you set for the rules (course of fire)?
Use a rest? Open sights? Scopes? Any target the has a 1” X and 2” 10 ring? Etc. etc.

Score it.
Take a picture of the target. Post it here. I'll try to get a few scores in before we have our next match on July 13th. 10 shots at 100 yards. NRA A-25 target or the WalMart equivalant target: 1 inch X ring; 2 inch ten ring; 4 inch nine ring; 6 inch eight ring; 8 inch seven ring; 10 inch six ring and 12 inch five ring. Any rifle or pistol. Any sights. Any position. Joe

Yea: The wife is going to WalMart tomorrow morning and I am gona tag along. Gona get a couple packs of those WalMart targets with the one inch "x" and 2 inch 10 ring.
My grand son wants to go fishing in the afternoon, but we should be able to give that 100 yard target a try on Tuesday or Wednesday. Haven't shot that target in competition since I was "into" NRA smallbore prone tournament back in the late 50's and early 60's. Ya want pictures of just the target and rifle or do you want the shooter in the picture too? Joe

Heck Yea!!!
Last time I tries 100 yards I did'nt do so good. Don't take much wind to throw'em off at that distance. I'll try and go this Saturday if things go right for a change. Still trying ammo for 100 yards and 50 too since the new brick of Wolf don't impress me much. |

Yea: The wind.
A 10 MPH cross wind will drift the .22 rimfire: 1/4 inch at 25 yards. 1 inch at 50 yards. 4 inches at 100 yards. If you are sighted in at 100 yards in calm conditions and a 10 MPH wind comes up from 3 o'clock: AND YOU DON'T SEE IT, you now have a 4 inch group. If the wind now switches to 9 o'clock: AND YOU DON'T SEE IT: You now at an 8 inch group, all shots in a line from left to right. Watch the wind! If you have a real bad target, post it anyway: And: BLAME IT ON THE WIND. Joe :-)

It seems to me that we need to sight our guns in when there is NO wind...then learn the effects the wind has on the bullit in flight. It looks to me like anything past 75 yards is just throwin them in there amongst the others Until you git sighted in and learn the wind. It is a lotta fun but be ready to git aggrivated,,,I know I will

Put up two targets. One above the other. Sight in on the top target and when ya think ya got er close to the middle, go down on the record target: 10 shots.
It's OK to go back up to the sighter target to check for a wind change. Joe :-)

Set out your wind flag(s): More is better.
1. Look for the wind condition that occurs most often. 2. Sight in using that condition. 3. Take note of a second condition that occurs often. 4. Hold center in that condition and see where the shots go. 5. If your most common condition does not come back: Hold off and use your second condition. Note: In a sanctioned match there are time limits. If neither of your conditions comes back and you have 15 seconds before "Cease Fire": GUESS! Do you know what "Match Pressure" is? You will. You will. But let's not put a time limit on this match yet: OK. Joe

Grrrrrr....after posting the last pic, this stupid puter decided it need a rest...one of these days I'm gonna use it for a target...with my 300 mag.
Anyway, I had a pretty good day shootin...for me anyway. The wind was pretty calm early then became tornado strength...normal for here. The trouble with shootin thru a lane in the trees is the wind seems to do a lot of swirling and changing directions. Ended up having to leave earlier than I wanted but thats the way it goes. Kinda curious about the vertical stringing with the Classic...maybe needs floated? Should'nt... but I should check it. Any ideas?? I'll try and go in the morning and do a little more at 50 yards and may even try 25 yards just to see if I can. For some reason I forgot we were firing 10 shot groups so I did the usual 5. I would like to make some wind flags since the last 10 yards or so of my range is open to the wind and it changes a lot there at the last..it seems this is the most vulnerable part of the bullets flight. Of course I could move my bench but them I would'nt have a good shade to set in. ![]() |

That's one fine shootin Kimber. Maybe you ought to mix it up with the boys over on Rimfire Central, in the E-Mail Match.
25 shots for score at 25 yards and 25 shots at 50 yards on the USBR target. Take a look at the target. Joe

Thanks for the offer Joe. Actually the Oklahoma team Capt. has contacted me about joining....I think he's from Shawnee...not too far from me.
I've been real pleased with both of these guns except for being so picky about ammo. I hope to get another...Super America...soon. I really like the looks of those. I'm more into sporting rifles than the target or benchrest styles. Love the wood. I guess I better stay here. Nothing wrong with your matches and I like to read the post at RFC, but I seldom have anyone to shoot with me and I really like the informal... just for fun matches we have goin on here. I think I have some of your practice targets around here somewhere, if I get a chance to go in the morning I may it a try. |
