just received stevens 311 16 ga from my father in law--ident circle b then k then p----can you tell me date,etc-tom

Look on the bottom of the receiver just behind where it breaks open. IF it has a date code it will be there. It will be a circle with a number and a letter in it. The letter is the date code.

Don't look on the receiver after the barrel is broke open. Turn the gun completely over and look on the very bottom of the receiver, either just in front of the trigger guard or at the front where the forearm meets the receiver. It will be a very small oval with a number or two and a letter. The letter designates the year starting with A for 1949. I believe the letters O and Q were not used. What 311 is it--311a or 311H or what. After 1968 they had serial numbers. Before 1949 there was nothing.

E is 53. I doubt anybody can tell you what the 17 is for.
