Default Ivers Johnson Champion Help needed

My father In-Law was given a Ivers Johnson Champion 12GA. break open shot gun.The only serial number I can find is "GXUI" behind the trigger guard, on the side of the receiver it says " IVER JOHNSON'S ARM & CYCLE SHOP Fitchburg Mass USA. The top of the barrel says "12Guage full choke, barrel and lug forged in one."

Looking for approx manufacture date?
What type of ammo can be used in it?

That ij was more than likely made from 1940 thru the 1950's. letters were used for batch numbers or serial numbers instead of numbers-(and nobody knows why)and then they went back to numbers

Assuming the gun is mechanically sound, modern 12ga 2 3/4" shells should be OK. No steel shot, nothing bigger than #4 buck.

Have an actual gunsmith check it over before you shoot it, though.
