Default Remington R-15 VTR Byron South Signature Edition

Walked into my local shop at the wrong time. They had one of these on the rack. First I had seen. Fell for it. Not cheap, but I hear you can't take it with you. Mounting a 1.5-5 Leupold as a frist try. Have a red dot but think I will prefer a real scope. Got lots of varmint weight ammo but ordered some heavier bullets so I can load to check what does best with the 1 in 8 twist.

Will report back in a few days .... yea, and pic.

Anyone played with one?

By the way, that little Brittany on the left will be 2 on July 4th. Super bird dog and just the best!

I absolutely LOVE Remingtons (have 8), and had a golden opportunity to buy one of these babies at a very, very, low price. Used. Unfortuately I had committed to a couple of other firearms that day (gunshow) including a new 700 VTR (which I love) and by the time I made my mind up to go ahead and pull the trigger on a third someone else licked it up! It was an absolute steal @ under $600.00. Like Brittany's too, hunt birds for years with one. Just didn't want to open up old wounds. Everytime I pass on a gun I live to regret it! By the way, didn't know you folks in CA. were allowed a firearm like this one. You might hurt someone just owning it!

Don't rub in the CA thing. We are lucky they do not outlaw all 'black' guns ... or in the case of the Rem, green-camo.

Lots of Rems here, too. Especially shotguns. Over the years I have owned at least 500 rifles/shotguns/handguns. Regret selling many but sometimes .... The 700 is tops, the 3200, of course the 870 and 1100. But, have had some good ones from most every maker - US, Japan, and Europe. Keep few around these days but manage to have one for any occasion. Hang onto a Winc M21, a S&W 30-06 built by Husqvarna on an HVA action, couple of OLD 1911's, my Les Baer, a trap and a skeet 3200. My Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle - not very accurate but I like it.

At $600 you should have snapped up that Remington 223. The 18" bbl'ed Signature Model is really hard to find around here. I have seen one! Saw a few at shops on the web nearing $1800 new! One at $1600 but stated 'out of stock'! I read only 500 were made? Liked the camo ... and I am not a camo fan. Though admit I kept a couple of varmint guns 'taped' for a few years. In great shape when I 'peeled' them. Don't think you can buy that tape any longer?

As I said, I only keep a few around these days. Decided it was about time to really thin them out as I have no one to leave them to. No, don't volunteer! But, sure enjoyed all of them.

Even gave away most of my reloading stuff to a couple of young shooters who were getting into reloading. That equipment is really expensive these days and I had a lot, particularly dies/brass/bullets, that I will not use again. . Took some they did not want to my local club and out a tag 'FREE TO GOOD HOME' on them. Kept 45CP and 223 stuff to play with. Had 222, 22-250, 220Swift, 243, 6mm, 257R, 270, 308, 30-06, 338,350RM (great round), 375H&H, 38Spec, 357, 40S&W, 9mm (hated to load those little things!), 38Super, 10mm, 28guage, 20g ... all gone. Hundreds of hulls, pounds of brass, pounds of bullets, ....

Wish I could start again about 50years ago!

But, gonna take the Les Baer with me! Maybe a couple of 3200's, too. Next, I will give away a couple of safes.

Back to the rifle, let us know how it shoots as soon as you get the chance. I'm thinking seriously about buying one of the Remingtons. Leaning towards the .30 AR. I only own 3rifles, all Remingtons.

Sure will. Putting a Leupold 1.2-5 on it to start and will probably stay with a scope rather than a dot. I would not normally go for a gun with a short bbl, but .... Will try some factory stuff but setting up one of my loaders for 223 progressive. I have other 223's but actually like 222 and 22-250 better for varmints. So, it has to overcome my prejudice. Also, it is the first AR based rifle I have ever played with and I have not been 'taken' by them ... when I was in VN (64-65) I and a M14 and a 1911A1! For some targets larger holes just seem better.

As promised, pics ... hmmm, these do not seem as large as I am used to. Let me know if they are useless. My little fantastic Brittany bird dog gets into everything! She is great.

18" bbl, Harris bipod, Pentax 2x-5x camo scope ... wonder if it will shoot?

Sweet ! The pics may be a little small, but they're still great! Have you got it out to the range yet? What's the Britt's name?

Range tomorrow, I hope. Waiting on some reloading stuff so with factory ammo. Have some I loaded for my bolt gun and Mini14 RR that I will try.

Her name is Casey. A name from her bloodline. Third Brit. She will be two on July 4th and already has had two fantastic seasons. Finds, holds, retrieves ... then runs past me to bury/hide the bird safely in grass/brush. Then you can have it. She will learn. Spoiled rotten, too. Also have two English Pointers but she beats them handily. Plus,a miniature Aussie for fun.

Pics - new computer and the old magic is not working for me. Gotta experiment. A MacBook Pro, was using a HP PC.

While I am at it .. trying to set up a Lee Turret loader for 223. Is there a way to make this really progressive for a rifle cartridge. I load pistol on a Hornady Lock-N-Load and on a Lee Pro 1000. Rifle loading has always been single stage for me as I was an accuracy nut and benchrester. But, would like more speed. Lee does not seem to have powder dies to fit the powder feeders like for my handgun loads???????

progresive for rifle is not quite what it is for pistol cartridges, but if you have all your brass prepped, it can be fairly expedient. I like to deprime with the Chucker and a universal decapper; then do all my prep and then go to the 550; works like a champ.

you'll have to get the scoop for the lee powder measures from those that bleed red.

OK, thanx! I have all the goodies for the Lee and the Lock-N-Load. Don't guess it is going to be quite as fast as reloading my handgun ammo. May as well stay with one of my single stage loaders.

Got the pics larger. Gad Zooks! This is my first black/green rifle (except the tape jobs I did on some 22-250's a while back) ... for a walnut/blue purest it is jump!

Default RANGE REPORT- Remington R-15 VTR Byron South Signature Edition

Set it up with a Pentax scope, camo to match the R-15. 2x - 5x on high rings, may not be quite enough power. Went to range today. I usualy set targets at 25, 50 and 100 to start sight-in on a new gun. But, due to others using the range I used the club's 50 and 100 yd berms. I find that POI at 25 is near POI at 100 and often saves some ammo. Very first shot - new rifle, new scope, PMC 55g FMJ factory ammo - was less than 1/4" off dead center bullseye. So, I packed up and went home ... no.

Moved to 100 yd target immediately. A little tweeking to get it 3" high, center R-L the fired 20 shots into 3.1". So, a total of 29 shots. For brand new off the shelf, 5x max, and low-end factoy loads I was pleased. Ain't those shoot-glow targets great!? Now to the loader. My other 223's are loaded with H322 but I also have some Varget to try. And, a bit heavier bullet, maybe.

Then went to my Mini-14 Ranch Rifle but I will save that tale except to say it is truly getting better.

Default Range Report - Mini-14 follow-up

Found a decent steel tube Weaver K-4 (like the old Weaver scopes) in a local shop and put it on the Mini-14. With factory PMC the Mini did just under 3" at 50yds. With some old varmint (circa 1980) handloads with H322 oushing 55g Hornady SX had just over 3" ta 100 yds! Damned good for me and a Mini-14. Now my old Remington 722 in 222 will put that same load under 1 MOA at 100 yds but I do not expect that from a Mini-14.

You buy a Mini because it WILL go bang every time. I accurized a mini 30 and changed it to 6mmPPC just because I get a kick out of shooting better than the guys that have AR's

Remington's AR is as good as anybody's for the same price
