Default gun calibers

Looking at an old smith & wesson that is very specified 38 smith & wesson not 38 special. Is this a 38 short?

Welcome to TFF.

There are two similar "short" .38 rounds:

.38 Short Colt is same diameter as .38 Special and can be used in same, but .38 S&W is slightly larger in diameter and won't chamber in a .38 Special gun.
