1911 grips - The Firearms Forum

I read the threads by Woodnut (about 3 dozen times) and decided to make my own grips this is them.

they need some more hand sanding(this is straight off the disk sander) and some finish. What should I use to finish them? what about some rosewood colored stain? they are so light colored .

very clean job! how bout tung oil? try it on any scrap ya got and see how ya like it.

What do you like? Dark, light, flashy. black? Can you narrow down your personal likes in a finish? Might help us give you a few suggestions.

I by far prefer hand rubbed boiled linseed oil. Done right its a very fine stock finish and will last a lifetime..

I usually use cocobolo or other dark woods on my knives because that is what I prefer but these scales were free so I tried them I usually just hand sand then buff the cocobolo or ebony I have never used maple before I will sand them then see what they look like I may try some tung oil I dont know where to get linseed oil

Oh maple. i have a set of hand made maple grips on my wifes CZ 83, they are finished with carnauba wax and buffed. They look like glass and absolutely no stain whatsoever. Maple looks great natural IMO..

Went to wally-world and bought some sandpaper and boiled linseed oil so we will see what they look like Thanks for all the compliments

We use catalyzed lacquer in our grips. It polishes up like glass and actually hardens the grips so they can handle abuse better. It's something to consider in the future if you make more.

H-D, that boiled linseed oil really made those grips POP! They look great! You will feel proud when you show them to your friends!

Thats it right there. I love BLO because it brings the depth of the grain forward while leaving the wood natural. Beautiful is a blonde rifle stock with about 15 hand rubbed coats of BLO. Its breathtaking. Plus BLO is alot like treesap. it will harden and seal the grips so theyll last forever.

I completely agree Josh. Hand rubbed BLO is the bomb. And it ain't workin if yer hands don't get HOT from the rubbing. It gives a 3d effect like no other, and pics won't do it justice.

No they dont. I have a Boyds K98 mauser stock that sings. I can take pics all day long but itll take your breath in person..

I have been off the forum for a while with computer problems. Just now read your post again and looked at the grips. I meant to post earlier but it had to wait for my new computer. Man you did a killer job on the grips for just getting started. They really look professional. Way to go. Keep up the good work.

Couldn't help but notice the Harley logo in your avatar. Did you see the set of grips in the gallery on my site with the Harley hat pins inlaid in the Desert Ironwood.?
