As for having a still, making any form of liquor is illegal in this country and I would rather avoid the ATF knocking on my door.

Your allowed to make whiskey or any distilled spirits or beer here in the US for your own consumption. Not illegal at at all. There is a limit to the amount you can make(have to google that) . It's when you try to sell it with out a gov't stamp that you run afoul of the ATF.

I like Guinness, if you like sweets try it mixed with hard cider. Not my preference, but I have friends that are nuts over it.
I'm a single malt fan, I like to taste around. MacAllan (sp?) is good. There is generally a difference if you get 12 year old or older, most single malts are considered to take that much time to mature.

This is inaccurate.

Production of any amount of distilled liquor, even for personal consumption, requires paying applicable taxes.

Now a days the only time i drink is with certain friends when we are at camp hunting or fishing. It takes place at night before we eat dinner while we are cooking. So sometimes dinner is real late. I dont drink anything like i used to. We allways play it safe. Its never done at home and only with good friends that dont get angry. When i get sauced i like to laugh, i dont want to see any fighting. And i dont want to have to go anywhere so no driving, unless we are on our property shining hogs.
Never had a dui and never will.

I prefer single malt scotch in cooler weather and martinis in the hotter weather.

The single malts can get pricey. Of course, it depends on how much you drink.

Single malt scotch - Macallan, Oban. 12yr is pretty good, 18yr is better (smoother) and I've never had the pleasure of a 25yr. Signatory makes some pretty good single malts at reasonable prices.

Martini - I've gravitated to the Vesper Martini (aka, James Bond Martini). It's a blend of 3 parts gin, 1 part vodka and 1/3 part Lillet. Good stuff.

One other thing I forgot to mention on the single malts. The taste is very distinct. I've been told you either love it or hate it. I don't understand how anyone can hate it. I have found that I prefer the single malts from the highlands.

Part of the fun of it is tasting from all areas of Scotland.

Cultivate a taste for expensive whiskeys, rums, beers and other spirits. You'll never be able to afford enough for drinking to ever become a problem unless you're extremely successful (in which case you can afford a clinic).

BTW, the best whisky, rum, rye, etc contains a lot of "hangover" producing esters which are a key component of their flavor. Also buy/download some good resource material on the art of brewing/distilling and its impact on civilization and politics. (Gives you something to read while you sip.).

OTOH, if all you're seeking is another "mood altering substance", then just go the "gilly juice" route - grain alcohol and fruit juice - for a quick high and no hangover. >MW

I prefer single barrel bourbons, such as Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek, among others over any of the blended fare.

As was stated, you have to acquire an appetite for scotch, but single malts have no equal in a world market dominated by blends. My favorites among the single malts include those rather heavy on the peat such as Lagavulin, Laphroig, Oban, among others. Beginners might start with something a bit lighter such as Dalwhinney. None of the better single malts are cheap, so I might suggest trying it by the glass at a well-stocked bar before committing to buying a bottle. By the way, the older the vintage, generally the better.

You didn't ask about gin, but that's another arena of exploration that is well worth a focused effort. Very dry martinis have no equal, but they must be cold. Very cold. And straight up. Skip the girlie flavored lemon drop novelty concoctions and insist on getting a quality gin that can stand on its own. I like Baffert's, but they are plenty of great ones out there.

Gross.

Something of a beer aficionado here having tried and recorded well over 400 brews now. As for liquor vodka straight (with ice if I need to look socially acceptable), gin with tonic, tequila about once a year. Rum, whiskey, bourbon, scotch... never!

Buffalo Trace is a tasty bourbon at a reasonable price, I also like single malt Scotch. If I drink blended Scotch, it's either JW Green or Blue.

I don't drink much rum, but if I do, I prefer Appleton Estates Reserve.

I believe everyone has different tastes. What tastes good to some may taste awful to others. You're young so my suggestion to you is to try as many as you can until you find what tastes best to you. Buy small quantities and drink in moderation. My drink of choice is dark rum. The more it is filtered the harsher it gets (white rum). Cheers.

Always been partial to tequilla myself. I love Herradura Anejo, but at 60.00 a bottle I keep that one to myself. Millagro is almost as smooth & half the cost.
For beers its always been a Texas brew for me, & Shiner Bock is the only way to go!
