One of the most difficult things I've ever had to do, even though I knew it was the best thing for the dog. It hurts now, but time heals.

At age 63, I purchased my FIRST dog. I can't imagine the day when I would have to put him down, though the roles may get reversed. I'm now 64 and Charlie is only 1.

Terminator, I really feel for you. They are incredible companions.

Terminator, I have - at my age - been there several times.
You are right; it never gets easier.

God bless you, and be assured that this goodbye is not permanent -

It is extreemly difficult and I know you must be hurting. No other animal loves like a dog does. Just know he loved you and its something you had to do. I pray for your healing to come quickly.

It's been a rough week-end .... last night I had to have my 19 year old Tennessee Walker put to sleep. We've done a lot of trail riding over the years .... I have her son
and a daughter so this is , perhaps, a little easier for me than losing a dog.

I am so sorry.

Just yesterday I lay on the living room floor with my 15 year old yellow lab, Daisy. I stoked her head, and gave her a belly rub. I thought about what is coming and cried like a little girl. It is difficult for her to get up, her hind legs don't want to work, and sometimes she doesn't make it to the front door in time, sometimes I don't wake up quick enough to let her out. For the past few months we have a local company that comes in every 6 weeks to steam clean the carpets, but for 15 years she has been by my side. When I come home she has always greeted me with joy. When someone comes on to our property she let us know and gave us a "lab" report on their intentions. She spotted the doves before we did, and she retrieved every type of critter. When I picked up my shotgun, she was between the doorway and me, and would beat me to the car. She comforted me when I was sad, and shadowed my every step. She has been my constant companion since she was a little ball of fur. She doesn't seem to be suffering now and when I watch her struggle to get up, I realize I struggle too. We have grown old together, and I know the time will come soon when her struggle is just too much. For now, I just dread the day.

I don't have words for what you have just gone through. I pray I have your strength to do what has to be done.

God bless you and comfort you in your loss.

Fred

This truly is one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. In my case, one day I looked at her and she looked at me and together we knew what had to be done. It was the right decision - it was the only decision.

Kandi was an 18 year old Golden. One of the best friends I've ever had. I still miss her, but I know she had a good life and I know there is a special place for her while she waits for me to join her.

I know it's cliche to say, but it's true . . . it's hard now, but time does heal.

Sorry Terminator,
Really hard to give up a friend who has been so loyal and ready to please you. I have unfortunately been there, also. Does hurt the heart.

Terminator, I wanted to thank you for your post. When you said, You hoped you hadn't waited to long, it struck a cord. Last night, Miss Daisy ate supper by my desk, then laid there and slept. When she woke up, she couldn't get up in time. At 11PM, the wife cleaned the rug and I sat in a small baby pool, in the dark, in the rain, washing my poor puppy. We dried her and she slept through the night, and then this morning had trouble coming up the step to come back into the house. I know the time has come. My sons are coming on Tuesday to help me take her for her last ride.
Those of us who have had the pleasure to share our lives with such wonderful creatures have been blessed. It is just so hard when the time comes for them to leave our side.
I did not mean to steal your thread, but felt compelled to share what I am going through.

I have had to put down several pets in my years. The loss never gets any easier. The loss is hard to get over because you get used to every time you put your shoes on, the dog has beaten you to the door and is waiting to go for a ride with you. My two Lap Yappers (Little ankle biters) always fight to see who gets to ride shotgun. It is off to the local banks drive throughs to get thier daily dog treat, get the mail, and drive around town to make sure everything is secure. They are happy. They travel with me everywhere I go.

So, I am sorry for your loss. It never gets any better every time it comes that time. Pets are family who trust you with out wanting anything.

How do you say good bye to a friend that never sees a mistake that you make. They never hold a grudge regardless of how stupid you are. And if you lost every dime you had would set down and starve right along with you. I really think when we cross over all of our best friends will come running to us thu an eternal mist.
