About 4 weels ago, one of our little 6lb. Papillons got bid by a Copperhead.
About $1000 later, in Vet and Meds bills she is doing much better, but I'm NOT... ![]() I have built a "Swinging Door" type snake trap., pics later. My intention is to bait it with live rodents I catch around the property. I am aware of the tactic of laying down a piece of plywood for them to crawl under . But that's too easy for me... ![]() Finally, to my question: ![]() Does any one have an idea for other types of bait ?? I was thinking of peanut butter with birdseed mixed, this might attract mice, but I don't know about snakes. I'm pissed, and I'm on a mission Grrrrrrr. ![]() Any advice would be appreciated. ![]()

Even easier than that Al. Go to the pet store and buy a pet rat or mouse. securely tie a piece of fishing string around him and tie him off to an anchor in the ground near a weedline or brushpile or next to the underpinning of your house. The snake will eat him and the string wil remain attached to the rodent, the snake wont know hes caught, he will just realize when he tries to crawl away his food tried to come up so he will lay still. when you come up on him to check the trap he will try to crawl off and wont be able to without regurgitating his meal, which takes a minute, long enough to initiate a kill with some snake shot or a machete.

its actually a tried and true method for traping a snake. the string doesnt hurt them, it just buys you time so you can.

best to tie a slip knot in it and get it around the ribcage just under the front armpits. Which is also why its easier to use 'pet' mice. a wild rodent would rip your fingers to shreds if you tried to noose him.

Did you ever think that maybe you are going to be inviting more snakes into your yard and as such will increase the odds of another bite to your dog.

You are probably already aware that there is a snake bite vaccine nowdays. I don't know if it works on copperheads or just rattlesnakes.

Different approach ...... Buy a peacock, or two. If you keep them supplied with grain they will hang around your yard .... they are pretty .... they are very good at killing
snakes . Personal preference .

My dogs get bit by copper heads all the time. I just give them milk to drink and the swelling goes down in a couple days. I have never lost a dog to a copper head bite.

the best solution is to convince the snakes to stay away..that way you, your family and your pets dont take the chance of being bit in the first place. this starts with "housekeeping", clean up piles that they would be attracted to, in other words anyplace a mouse would consiter attractive. Wood piles, junk piles, leaves, grass cuttings ect.
if you have firewood, stack on a pipe stand, use Terpintine under the stand, yes you will need to retreat after heavy rains, or when you fail to notice a good turpintine sell. this also helps keep spiders, mice and other pest from nesting in your firewood. powdered Lime is a serious deterant also to snakes, it cloggs up their breathing openings and lungs. but it has to be a good layer not just a sprinkle, is good for crawlspaces and where water and dampness isnt a problem. good mothballs help too, again if you cant smell it...its not working! lime and Mothballs were once consitered topline deterrances for skunks and snakes. Prevention is the key! Not attracting and hunting! get even by removing their prey and their nesting "housing" areas! less food = less snakes! Last edited by hunter29180; 08-19-2011 at 02:24 PM.. |

You could also release a couple of king snakes in your yard they'll keep the bad snakes out or have them for dinner!

If your dogs will play nice around cats, get one. Preferably a female (spayed!). A cat will wear a snake out. I watched my cat catch and eat every last scrap of one.
If it's too big to eat, the cat will harass it to the point of leaving and never coming back. Cats are faster than snakes and wear them down. Kinda fun to watch too.

here we carry a length of wire used like a whip/club the wire will bend to the contours of the ground but break the snakes back a hook or bend on the end is common to pull snakes out into the open to get them better , but i wear snake boots when playing this game and unless your used to it suggest snake shot in a .22 or shotgun instead

I was thinking cats too. We have a few outside cats here to catch mice and snakes from the fields and a huge pond with tons of overgrowth. |

you know. i was just thinkin, and this is prolly the best route to take.. Snakes are pretty good eatn. I have eatn rattlesnake, its actually quite good IMO, copperhead cant be much different. So maybe the trap would be best and then skin em and eat em.

Plus IMO, its a win-win-win situation for you AL if you trap em and eat em.. #1 you get to eat, which is always good, I dont like being hungry.. #2, you get rid of your snakes, which is good because you dont want them around trying to eat your high dollar barking dust mops
.. and #3 snake skinz are relatively easy to tan and you can sell off the skinz as hatbands or if you get a biggun, you could fashion yourself a new rifle sling.Just a few thoughts.. ![]()

I got to wondering what snake tasted like back when Metal Gear Solid 3 first came out on PS2. So I killed, cooked, and ate the next snake i came across. which was a rattler, bout 5 feet long. Wasnt too bad. Fried him like fish and ate him with ketchup.

skin , gut and remove the shute from the snake ( important to remove the shute eh)
lightly roll in plain flour and fry the peices some garlic and chilli into the oil before frying adds the flavour a bit better but not needed some sweet thai chilli sauce and you favourite vegetables fryed along with em and theres a top feed nothing wrong with snake just make sure ( here in OZ ) it aint protected species or it will be a expencive meal but if it attacks you its self defence ( pity we dont have that same right of self defence against 2 legged snakes) and you can eat whats left no worries |
