#1, and this is nothing new, when out and about, if you smell the smell of cucumbers a copperhead aint far away. #2, get an old piece of old tin and lay it out away from your house, maybe out near an old brush pile and check it OFTEN! Sooner or later, you'll find it there!

I live waaaaaay out in the country as well, surrounded by woods, cotton and peanut fields. Snakes ARE going to be around. There is natural food and cover for them, so they will thrive. The ONLY options are:

1. Live with them.

2. Hunt/harass/trap them.

3. Have something else hunt/harass them.

I like option #3. I've lived here about 5 years and have seen only one snake in my yard and it was in a cat's mouth.

Al. If you live in the country as I do, the mouse or hamster or whatever you plan on using for live snake bait will prob be a snack for a bobcat, coyote, fox, etc before the snake will get too him...

Around the camp, we use a repellent called "Snake Away" that I buy from the co-op...Seems to work as not seen any snakes at the camp sight for years.

If its REVENGE you after , Ive seen snake traps that use a chemical attractant, but dont know how well they work. If you can figure out a method to keep the bait mouse inside a plywood box that you have drilled a hole just large enough to allow the snake to enter..After he eats the bait he wont be able to get back out for a while until he digests the critter...Problem is, keeping the mouse from getting out the same hole..I suppose you could 'super glue' him to one end of the box...

Then you can always call "Billy the Exterminator" as a last resort.

The brush pile that is heaven for your bunnies is probably what is attracting the snakes as they like bunnies too!

Get rid of the brush pile and your problem will likely just crawl away!

This brings up a question that I've always wondered about... Golf balls... It's been said that a snake may not be smart enough to know the difference between the ball or an egg, he'll eat it and die. Personally I have a problem with this idea, knowing that a snake will regurgitate if he senses a problem, that is IF he senses a problem.

The other thing that bothers me with this story is that I have a friend who works at the Country Club here... There are sure to be golf balls everywhere, right? I know nothing about golf, but I suspect there would be lost balls strewn around the edges of the greens... Anyway, she says they have a huge problem with vipers hiding out in the filters of the swimming pools.

IF it worked though, I'm sure with a little effort you could purchase a small pile of used balls, perhaps break an egg or two, mix it up and pour over the balls.

Rattlesnake tastes okay, but the pork chop, country fried potatoes and dinner roll that I had with it tasted a lot better... Hey if I was starving, it would taste like heaven.

Here's a pic me and a lil' Copperhead...

Having dogs around, I'd stay away from the mothballs. You spread them around and they disolve. If the mothballs get into any puddled water and the dog happens to drink it, it will kill the dog.

Get a black snake. They're harmless and will overtake a copperhead everytime.

Copperheads are hunters. They strike for defense and for killing prey. I don't think they eat eggs, so the golf ball trick wouldn't affect them.

We used old car hoods for rattlesnake roundups. they are up off the ground a bit so they dont get too hot which creates a perfect thermal oasis for a cold blooded snake.

I wouldn't kill a harmless snake, but make no mistake that this one rests in pieces.

Like I say, friend "if I were starving".... I guess that includes living on mutton. But it's hard to beat a good ol' pork chop.

Here's a link to some great Copperhead facts.

http://www.desertusa.com/animals/copperhead.html

Here is one fact I didn't like reading...

"With luck,

the young copperhead can expect live

for nearly
two decades in the wild."

Not if I can help it.....
