Hey all, sorry if this is in the wrong section, I didn't see anywhere else to put it.
My name is Jimmy, and I stumbled upon this forum whilst looking for info on my Marlin model 60 (squirrel on stock). I read through a couple threads and liked what I saw. A bit of background on me first: I'm stationed in Norfolk, in the US Navy as a GSM; Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical). I work on jet engines used for electrical and main propulsion of ships. Not a bad line of work, and I'm very proud to be a Navy engineer, seems like we get the most respect, next to SpecWar of course, from other sailors. My first firearm was the 60 mentioned above. I got it from my dad for x-mas when I was 10. That thing's older than I am! (I'm 21) But I do need to go home on leave and get it fixed, as it won't eject spent casings, and it double feeds My next was a Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga. Got that on x-mas when I was 14 (hmm, seems to be a pattern there). My only complaint with the 870 is the finish, as the metal rusts wherever the oils from the skin touch it. I plan on getting a coating of some sort, maybe some camo-form or something. Both are fun to shoot and the .22 is as accurate as they come.I am currently looking for a bolt action rifle, and leaning towards the Marlin XL7, Winchester 70, or Remington 700, in order of preference. That will be a later purchase though. Unless someone wants to take over payments on an '04 mustang gt w/ some performance mods and a $1500 racing seat, harness, and bar interior? lol Cliff's Notes: aged 21; own Marlin model 60, Rem 870 mag; in the Navy; want a centerfire bolt action rifle.

Welcome to the site, don't be afraid to ask questions. don't forget about the savage axis/edge series of rifles, they're designed to be an entry level rifle.

If you weren't set on a bolt action, I'd make you a deal on a semi .30-06.

I might be interested in something like this. Is it listed on the buy/sell/trade section? If not pm me.

Welcome
On the bolt actions the Remington 700 is great. Don't overlook the Savages though. They make one of the most accurate out of the box rifles available

Welcome and thanks for your service. Of the three bolts you listed the Marlin would be waaay down on my list. Remmy, Win, Savage, FN, Tikka, Sako just depends on what you want to spend. After market is much more available for the Remmy but Savage and Win are pretty good there too. Gunsmiths are probably more familiar with the remmy 700than any other rifle on the planet so thier easy to get worked on and accurized. Good luck.
okie

the marlin is just OK, as for a M70 winchester, get a pre 64 if you can. The new M70 Winchesters made by FNH here in the US are also good. The are made at the same factory as the Mini. Most Remington 700 are good. ADL are entry level has a blind magazine, BDL has a floor plate, CDL is best with the removable magazine. If you buy a used 700 check the trigger adjustment screws for the factory epoxy to make sure it has'nt been messed with. Enjoy

JQuals,
I'd opt for anything wearing the Savage brand these days ! Long been among the most accurate barrels in the industry, now sporting their "accu-trigger" that's a real gem, and - depending upon the model you buy - offer "convertibility" permitting you to change caliber/cartridge for yourself with simple/cheap tools ! For a long time the "knock" on Savage has been their rather "plain jane" appearance and styling. That's changing and do you buy a gun to look at or shoot ? Always been one hell of a value as well ! >MW |

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.
-I'm not interested in getting a semi just yet, since I want to get the SKS my dad sold to a friend back asap. Man, I miss that thing. -I'm looking for a decent new rifle probably .270 or something similar. It's too bad I can't find a new 7.62x(51?) bolt action, that's what I really want, but there doesn't seem to be too much. -Marlin has a bottom of the bucket bolt? I read a few reviews and they say it's not too bad, especially for the price vs performance on a starter rifle. -I still owe a bit over 13k on the stang, it's an 04 GT. I honestly wouldn't let someone take over payments on it just yet. The previous owner either didn't use loc-tite or a torque wrench when they put new gears in it and I sheared off all the ring gear bolts, so it's getting a 31 spline upgrade. - I've never even heard of Tikka or Sako, I'll have to look into those. |

Welcome, One of the best values in bolt action rifles is the Stevens 200 series. They are 100% Savage and are very accurate. I have two now and might buy a third just because I love them so much. Prices are very reasonable too.

![]() I am another fan od savage rifles. They are great out of the box and easy to customize and build. I did a savage 11 .308 (7.62X51) earlier this year. it turned out great and is a perfect example of what a plain ol off the shelf savage can be with a little determination and some fairly inexpensive hand tools. This one started life as an accustocked savage mod. 11 in .308. I rebarreled it with a heavy varmint barrel and had the stock dipped by a buddy of mine, while I was waiting on the barrel to arrive I trued the action and lapped the lugs for 100% contact. I rebarreled with a 26" varmint contour CBI in .308 10 twist. and I shoot 175 gr SMKs exclusively. Its a solid 1/4 MOA gun. The rifle was a 600 rifle NIB and I put another 500 or so including the barrel and tooling to make it look and shoot like it does now. Pics before and after...

My dad shoots a Savage 111 LRH chambered in .300 Win Mag. He absolutely loves it! I have not squeeezed off enough rounds to compare it to my 700 chambered in 30-06. Its my deer gun, and it works like a champion! I love the 700, but Im sure Id love a new Savage too. Specially after lookin at the current, retail pricing!(for entry level rifles anyways!) Great looking rifles, with great service to boot! They have been nothin but helpful with my little Model 93 Classic!

I understand where you come from, as well as the lack of emotion behind the words, so please know, I mean no disrepect or bad attitude towards any of y'all in my words; but what little time I ahve put into research, I haven't found much of what I'm looking for, or the navy's computers won't load the pages. I am aware that the .308 is essentially the same round as a 7.62, as well as the fact that a 5.56 has a longer "lead", as well as the fact that .223 ammo can be used less accurately in a 5.56, but 5.56 in .223 isn't reccomended due to the difference in barrel pressure upon firing. I just never had much time for net research, growing up, due to feeding cows and doing fencework when I wasn't at school or work.
I was never really interested in shooting until recently when I shot one of my friend's 700's. The only shooting I have ever really done was clays with my 870 and some targets with the Marlin. And then I was only about 14-17, so none of that really mattered to me, I figure this is as good a place as any to start learning more. I am asking these questions, but let it be known: I am also using the search bar! I know, a shock right? lol, I am on other forums for my Dodge addiction, as well as the Mustang, and the same problem seems to happen there. The main difference being I know more about old Rams, and I mostly read about stang stuff. There also happens to be s fairly large stack of 7.62x51 ammo that I have free access to ![]() I also know that perf. parts decrease the value of a vehicle. Unless of course you buy it anywhere near a military installation! |
