All it does is straighten the edge where it rolled over. Just about anything will do that. Let it get truly dull and try it.

Juker hits another winner. I just went to the kitchen and tried that on a couple Robeson scalloped edge kitchen knives I use all the time. Did the paper test before and after and it works. Neat, fast and the coffee mug is always at hand. Those scalloped edge blades a difficult to sharpen in the first place or so is the case for me an the rim of the mug got into the dips. Thanks Juker.

The coffee cup thing is not new; I was doing it in the late 70s. It will restore a fine edge but won't do much for a thoroughly dulled blade.
Neat thing to know, though. |

There's very few advantages of getting old, however one of those is that I get to smile when ever someone " discovers " a very old trick.![]()

Ain't it the truth, RJay?! I get a laugh from all the kids who think 'they' discovered alcohol/marijuana/ sex/ etc or any combination of them (and they do seem to combine)

*whips out his ceramic stick*
you mean they can use other pieces of ceramic (like a coffee cup) to do the same thing that my stick does? who'd a thunk it? |

Tried it, wound up cutting my coffee cup in half. A complete waste of $0.50 from a yard sale pick.

And for really large knives you could use the top edge of the toilet tank..

These You Tube videos are good in a way, they may be dredging up stuff that the old shooters know, but they are bringing them to the forefront for the new guys on the block. Other wise these old tricks would be lost.

My grandad actually taught me this when i was about 7. He gave my my first case pocket knife and showed me how to sharpen it properly with a whetstone, but also showed be I can maintain the edge with many household items, the bottom of the coffee cup was one. Another is the edge of a marble or granite countertop, you can steel the edge with the shaft of a broken drill bit, etc..

I also have ceramic cylinders. Used primarily for trigger jobs but they make great edge hones. I finished the edge on my ghurka with them.

I first learned about this honing effect by watching my Step father re-hone a double edge razor blade in a glass. He explained his father taught him the trick because during the great depression you had to use the same blade many times as possible. Now I wonder how many people under the age of 30 know what a double edge razor blade is

The key is that the sharpener must be harder than the item being sharpened.
Cardboard makes a wonderful strop.
