Had sorted all my .223 that needed to be trimmed separately and loaded most of what didn't need trimmed.
now i want to start trimming the cases that need it while i wait on more bullets to come in. any recommendations on a decent trimmer that does not take all day to trim cases Thanks

drill, LEE case trimmer & lock stud, and a LEE .223 case length guage..
http://www.ryobitools.com/catalog/po...s_drivers/D42K http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=107333 http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=476992 Its inexpensive and fast, plus I use the drill with the case to anneal the necks evenly.

I eventually got one of these from Lee it a little easier on the fingers if you trim a lot of cases.

Yup, the Lee trimmer is cheap and effective if you've only got a couple of calibers that you're trimming for. Heck, I've got studs for every caliber I own except for .204 and a couple other oddballs (Lee don't make anything smaller than .22 for this system).
I'll pass on the high-priced one too...especially at $70 per caliber. That would cost me way over $2000 to get setup in trimmers. And you can make your own wood handle for the cutter too in case you've already got the plain one. Just drill a chunk of your favorite wood (or just a scrap ) and either press-fit or epoxy the cutter into the hole.Last edited by Bindernut; 09-11-2011 at 08:53 AM.. |

Hornady makes a pretty good trimmer too. But if you have a lof of brass to trim, consider a Dillon 1200 trimmer. It will size and trim the brass as fast as you can run it into the press.
http://www.dillonprecision.com/conte...B_Case_Trimmer Nothing around like it except a Guraud trimmer. If Dillon is the Cadillac, then Giraud is the Bentley: http://www.giraudtool.com/ |

Dillon trimmer on the press:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L5WNOVlLAU Giraud trimmer in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X1Zdwnm9Fk He timed 23 cases per minute on this one. Sizing is another operation with the Giraud and chamfering is another operation with the Dillon so it's kinda a wash there. Last edited by medalguy; 09-12-2011 at 09:39 PM.. |

I have a lyman and hate using it. It doesn't cut the case mouth square.

I just got the Hornady Case-prep center about a week and a half ago to solve the same exact issue for 223 cases. It is the best investment I made in reloading equipment. You can fine tune trimming to .001 and then clean the neck, primr pocket and deburr inside and outside all with the same machine. I average 125 cases per hour but they are done soup to nuts. I'm really impressed and my hands are very thankful, no more blisters hand cranking everything. And the consistancy is what really pays off.

The cheep lee trimmer with the trim length guage has no choice but to cut square. the mandrel aligns the case by the mouth and the flashhole.

I also use the Lee trimmers and have not ever had a problem with the cases. It may take a little longer but I don't get in a hurry, anyway. It's not like I am going somewhere, when I sit down to reload, that is what my mind is on so I am just not in a hurry.

I use the Redding trimmer.....Other trimmers hold the case stationary and spin the cutter..........This ends up with a case mouth that is not square. The redding spins the case while the cutter is stationary and each and every case mouth is cut perfectly square. I will never go back to the other kind. ..........Don in SC

I have the Lyman Universal Case Trimmer and have no issues with it at all. It was part of the T-Mag II kit - my first purchase in the reloading game. I didn't have 3500 cases to trim, but I did go through 1600 in what I thought was a reasonable amount of time.
Santa did break down and get a RCBS Case Prep Center for me last year for the deburring and flash hole cleaning. I was trimming, deburring, flash hole cleaning and military crimp removal about 4 or 5 cases per minute. I was in no real hurry to get through the pile - keep moving forward and you'll eventually get to the end. The case prep piece of equipment is a stroke of genius for prep time reduction.

Thanks for asking this question. My best friend just mentioned he needs a .223 case trimmer and the advice was helpful.
