For the money there awesome but I'm more a bolt action single action revolver Guy. A 1911 was kinda the first step in admiting there's more to this game.

Used 223s can be had in all flavours for 300 or so hack the barrel down bed trigger and float with the rifles choice of load and many shoot inside mia.
heck those danger sps rem tacticals are pretty inexspensive brand new.

Have seen the mini14 target shoot with the adjustable muzzle ?

I've I did ever get one I'd still be just one shot at a time take my time. Its imprinted in me.I still haven't tried a rapid fire in the 1912

Sorry to get off topic

I have no doubt in my mind the .223 will do its job on deer. And the ammo will be loaded with Barnes TSX bullets to maximize the terminal effectiveness of the round and make the most of the energy transfer. The .223 generates 1500 ft lbs of kinetic force at 100 yds, all it needs is the right bullet to make the numbers work. And the TSX is that bullet. The problem small bores have had up until better bullets like the barnes TSX came along is the small projectiles tend to disentegrate before they penetrated much and would end up injuring game rather than killing it unless of course you could get a headshot. I believe the TSX bullets fix that issue. they hold together and penetrate as far as the round is capable of penetrating. It would not suprise me any if I see a pass thru or 2 on deer with the .223 loaded with barnes TSX bullets, but we will see..

My preferences lie in the same place. I much prefer bolt actions and single shots. And in fact this rifle was a day away from being sold to buy exactly that when the wife decided shed rather have the semi auto.

Holy fork'n horn! Big 'ol noggin on him!
Great deer!

Any idea how much mass it lost after tearing thru the deer? How much did that mushroom'd round weigh?

It 53 grs after blowing the blood and guts off with the compressor. 100% weight retention as advertised and centerd a rib. I've killer 3 deer with the 53 tax this was the first recovers bullet.

That's normal size for a Idaho forkie mulie. Wish I had pics of my big 4 point litetaly like twice the size of this little guy

See, you nailed a muley at 300 with the same weight TSX im loading in my .223 for use at a max diatance of 100 yds. There is alot of brush and cover at the lease, 100 yds will be a long shot.. I know itll drop deer.

Good job on that rifle Josh, I know your wife will like it, but you may have problems with JR wanting for himself! The Barns bullets have changed everything in the .223 catagory. You no longer have bullets blowing up after hitting a pine needle, or coming apart when striking a target. My dad, years ago, retired his .22 Hornet, when he took a shot, and watched the bullet particles hit the deer, after striking some pine needles. The Barns bullets will get the job done.

I have had no problem using a 223 with the right ammo for deer! I guide a lot of kids on there first deer hunt with a 100% success rate. We have never lost a deer and they all shot my encore with a 223 barrel which is a single shot. JLA thats a fine lookin job on the mini 14.

That is an awsome job Josh!

Just seeing it gives me the itch to do some work myself... but just dropped another grand in repairs for the truck. That darn thing is SEVERELY eating into my gun funds!

I dont wanna talk about dumping money into a worthless vehicle. I just got the call for my Jeep.. Its ready for me to pick up and the tab is $2051.79, lets just say the onlything still old on the tranny is the casing, all new internals, new torqueconverter, external cooler, HD rebuild kit, etc. etc. etc. If I didnt like that thing so much Id just tell them to keep it..

Thanks guys for all the compliments. It really turned out good and shoots good enough to get proper shot placement on deer. And Myles, beck does love it, and yes JR wants it to be his..

What kinda Jeep guessing its older since the tab is only 2 grand. Ouch.

I see your work on your firearms is awesome it wouldn't take much and you could be an awesome mechanic. I bet there wasn't a grand in parts put into your jeep

Its a '93 ZJ (grand cherokee laredo) V8 4X4.

I am a fair mechanic, and I would have rebuilt the tranny myself but I dont have the equipment to compress the 800# spring in the O/D drum of a 46RH 4 speed. That was a job for the guys down at performance trans. I have been using them for years. they have done 2 O/D auto trannys for me and a bunch of other stuff too. Excellent guys to work with. Id recommend them to anyone.

I can have my Cummins tranny rebuilt with goodies for 1200 at a local good tyranny shop specslizing in deseil trannys. That's with me doing the tranny removal and install.

2 grand is more than I'm willing to pay and would forfiet what ever warranty there might be for the doing 100% of the work.

Nice! That is impressive given how freekin fast that thing is flyin. You'd think just a little weight(a grain or two maybe!) would get deposited/lost somewhere!

Im gonna look into the TSX for my 30-06, for deer. Maybe the 150, or 165 grainers. Or both! Might as well try 'em out! Thnaks for the great opinions Evan, and Josh! I notice the Federal Premium Vital-Shok can come topped with a TSX...Might start there, and then try handloads too.

Im super jelous of the Mule-y! The few mule deer we get in way eastern OR are thinner deer, with little, twiggy lookin racks. They just dont look really healthy like that boy there.

I'd go 165tsx in the 3006 with 57grs of imr 4350. That's a magic load. Kill anything anwhete with it. That's a book load that shoots very good in mine.

Ill second that load. Its actually an OCW load and should shoot well in just about anything chambered for the .30-06 and loaded with 165-168 gr bullets pushed with that same 57 gr charge of IMR4350. The TSX bullets are killer. They have put the .300 H&H cartridge in viable cape buffalo choices. where 20 or 30 years ago you wouldnt see an experienced cape hunter with less than a .375 H&H.

Nice! Wish I could find myself a cheap .223 rifle. The local pawn shop has a Mini 14 for $550 and it has tons of scratches and dents on the stock and barrel. Gun shops seem to only carry mid-high end bolts that go for $600+. Guess I'm gonna have to order a Savage Axis without getting to hold/feel one first.
