Default First 1911 Range Report

went to the range twice last week with my new to me RIA 1911 GI. I shot around 200+ rounds 5 different kinds of ammo including JHP for the first range vist and 100 for the second. All I can say is I love this gun it shot great, the only trouble i had was from one mag 4x the whole day it would jam on the last round which makes me think its a weak spring. Other then that the gun shot everything i shot in it. Shot JHP without a problem, I am very pleased with this gun and am certain a couple of new mags will fix the other problem. I shot from around 7 yards and my grouping was pretty good all except for shooting about 2 to 3 inch low. The only other thing is the GI sights are very hard to see on a black target after the first range visit I put some white out on the front sight and worked great. I have moved the white out lower on the sight and will shoot it sometime this or next week to see if am still shooting high, once i have it where i want it i can file down the front sight a bit. Overall I think it was a great buy for my first 1911.

I've shot one and think they are an excellent value. I'm glad you're enjoying yours.

Before you file that front sight down, think! Your gun is probably designed to shoot a further distance than 7 yds. Back up to 25', try it at 50'. You might find that your point of aim is further out than 15'.

Also keep an eye on what cartridge you are using at the time. Generally a heavier bullet will hit higher with everything else staying the same. My point of impact of a 147gr. 9mm is 3 inches higher than a 115gr. bullet fired at 50' with no other changes. Play with that gun some more before you lower that front sight. Hard to put that metal back.

The milspec is designed to shoot a 230 gr FMJ RN at 830 fps at a distance of 50 yds. The bullets should strike somewhere around center. theyll be a bit high at closer ranges.

Try it at 25 yds. Id bet itll be pretty close to where you line the sights up.
