Hello All.
New here. Great forum. I recently picked up this 1903 6.5 MS, and am thrilled to finally own one. I was told it was a bring-back from the war. It hardly has any marking and oddly - the top of the receiver ring where it meets the barrel has been stippled thus covering the area where it usually reads 'Mannlicher Schoenauer etc.. The only thing showing in that area is 'Patent'. If anyone with information regarding this oddity could educate me on a possibility of this configuration, I sure would appreciate it. See pics. Thanks Much, Don

Those receiver were lightly stippled on the receiver ring and you can see the even machine stippling below the cruder marking. I have no idea why anyone would do such a thing, but the scope mounts might not be factory and if not, I would assume the obliteration of the markings was done at the same time the mounts were put on. Those are German proof markings, but it looks as if part has also been obliterated.
I strongly suggest you have that rifle checked and a chamber cast made; it is possible it is not in the original caliber. Jim |
