Hello,
I recently purchased an old Model 94 with a serial number of 495850 and now am trying to get an idea of its value. It isn't in the best of shape but I bought it anyway, I figured an early model 94 for $100 would be fun to have in the collection even if it has had a hard life. Please comment and help me get a better understanding of the rifle as I do not have any experience with these types of firearms. Thank you for the help

Can't speculate on value, but according to Winchester http://www.winchesterguns.com/suppor...-Documents.pdf
it was made in 1909. Been around the block some judging from pics. ![]() Last edited by GunnyGene; 03-22-2013 at 06:08 PM.. |

Is there any way for me to find out what the correct rear sight is for this year and model of the rifle and where could I purchase such a thing? Does the saddle loop make it more collectible?

As for the saddle loop, that would depend on the collector. There's a lot of these old guns floating around. I found several 1909's just doing a quick google search, and prices were all over the map. |

Looks like it should be this one.
http://www.gun-parts.com/peepsights/nov30_02.jpg Second column, second item, ladder sight. http://www.gun-parts.com/winchesterrifle/ Mine is from 1915 and looks just a little better than yours but it still shoots perfectly. Hope yours does too.

I stand corrected. I was under the impression the 3 leaf was a special order sight.
Are these available?

What's the bore look like? I think that's a great gun. I'm one of those strange birds that would rather have gun that shows some history over a pretty safe queen. I would carefully clean and repair it back to as original as possible shooting condition. But not change a thing cosmetically.

I also like how much history is shown on the rifle. The barrel is in good condition, no visible damage to the rifling. Front wood stock is worn away where the palm of your hand holds onto it to add more character as well. I am afraid to take it apart myself, should I take it to a gunsmith who has experience dealing with these firearms to have it cleaned up and checked out? what are the best materials one can use to clean up an old gun like this? I included some more photos, front sight and more full shots of the rifle.

That groove on forestock looks to me like where a band once was. But who knows, total speculation.
Here's a link to basic disassembly. But of a more modern example. Might be a few differences. But you can use it to get an idea of if something you want to try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjPlLQf73gQ |

Here's the rear sight on my old '94 saddle ring carbine with serial no. 596XXX from a couple of years later. Mines in .30 WCF too and still shoots great.

Your front sight is just like mine. I would guess that if you can't find the 3 leaf sight anywhere, that the ladder sight would work well too.
That stock must have seen some water at some time.
