Whats the long range capability of a .22LR?

well the manufactures warn of a 1 mile distance...since you didnt ask for the "effective" range....I have taken small game, ie; squirrel,rabbits,ect at 150 yds with a scope and 75 yds with iron sights in my younger days.

For punching paper, or ringing steel, I would say out to 500 yards under good conditions. For hunting, out to about 150 yards. The .22LR just doesn't have much energy left past that distance.

200 yards has been about it for me. I don't care to try much further than that.

i stretch it at 200-250 meter mark , i group 3"-4" at that range

My longest shot with the .22 was a 300yd shot at a pheasent hen. First shot hit low, and left, the second shot was to the head. Open sights with a Remington 552 Speedmaster.

Absolutely... but everyday, run of the mill rifles may disappoint you at that distance. OTOH, some of the same types of rifles may surprise you with excellent groups.

I have a book on .22 rifles written by E. C. Crossman in the 1920's. It talks of competitions at 200 yards. IIRC, the 10 ring was 7" but they were shooting with iron sights.

If I can get it to show, the following target was shot at 100 yards using a Remington/Zastava Model 5 rifle and Wolf MT cartridges.

I shoot mine at the 250 yd steel plate all the time. Id say for hutning purposes, 200 yds is max on small game if you can put the bullets where they need to be..

Living on the farm when I was young, it was fun to sit on a hill and shoot 400-500 yards over and pop old pumpkins

Silly thing to do, but what else can you do with the rotten ones??
Made great targets, and taught us interesting things about ballistic trajectories!!

, let me add to the question with a Rugar 10/22 or old Winchester model 63 do ya all think 100 yrd shoot with accuracy is reasonable?

depends on the ammo, but sure its reasonable with practice. as to a killing shot? now that Will depend on your accuracy!

We are just target shooting at the range no hunting is planned, Ive always been a plinker kinda shooter at old stone quarries and such but now my 15 year old and I are at a club with 100 yrd range we like shooting the big bore at 100 yards but have not yet tried the .22 at 100 I really thought that 100 yards for a .22 was too much so have not attempted. The goal if reasonable is tight groups at 100 yards iron sights and if need be a scope. If we get good at this we will probably buy a .22 target rifle.

Any advice on a good affordable (not high end) target .22 is appreciated.

Ive a friend who is big in long range .22...He found a link to a group in Calif. that shoot competition out to 300 yards... I will give him a call or an email today and post it later...Seems the gun of choice is a highly customized ruger 10-22...He was getting a "Green River" (???) barrel for his and it was backordered because the Calfi guys were scooping them up as fast as they could make them..

Be sure to check around at the Pawn Shops. You can usually find a good .22 rifle there for a low price. I picked up an old Westernfield Model M832, bolt rifle for .$65, and it's a tack driver!

JLA, that's a great looking Model 5 and a couple of nice groups. Have you adjusted your trigger? I've adjusted the triggers on both of mine down to roughly 2.5 pounds; very crisp too. I did have to thin the safety plate that blocks the trigger. It was too thick to work properly when the trigger was set the way I wanted. My two are consecutive serial numbers and one will go to each of my granddaughters.

IMO, the Zastava made Model 5's - Remington or Charles Daley - are of excellent quality and a great value for the money. They can be found for under $200 if one looks around.

I get only about 3 days a year with negligible wind. At that, 200 yards is pretty doable with my worked 10/.22 and mini-mags. I hit a bottle last week at about 270, and it was funny to see that the bullet barely had enough power to break it. It hit, and I saw small flying bits. A hesitation, and then the top fell off of the middle. I normally have about an 8mph wandering wind, so about 150 yards is the practical limit on stuff like empty shot shells.

When I was a teen many years ago, we used to sit on a hilltop and shoot .22's at a heavy gauge aerial sign used to mark a pipeline. It was at least 300 yards away and it was kind of like shooting a gong. I got pretty good with my Ruger MKI despite a huge amount of holdover. So yes, long range shooting with a .22 is possible.
