Hey guys,
I don't know if you remember me on here but I think the last time I was on here was right before I was to deploy. I ended up in Kunar province. I was only supposed to be there for two months because I was taking a soldier in my units spot because he was having a baby back home so I volunteered to finish out his deployment. I have a story to share... This happened in April and not even my close friends have heard what exactly happened. But I was told I need a release so right out of my journal this is what happened... Some backstory... I am in the Oregon National Guard. I am an Infantryman and I was deployed for two months in late March. On april 27th (two days before we were scheduled to start packing up and getting ready to go home) we did our last patrol. I was the second Humvee and we got hit by a roadside bomb. This is exactly how I remember it.... A round passed over my head. Sweat stung my eyes. The dust was everywhere and the yelling and screams just echoed over the high pitched ringing. I looked at the humvee. The doors were non existent and the whole front end was pushed inwards like it was made out of paper. The smell of burning flesh was in the air. I couldn’t move. My chest felt like it had a cinderblock on it. My rifle lay by my feet. I knew I had to get to it. Heavy machine gun fir and rifle fire was all around me. I could hear the sounds of RPGs. I knew I was in it. I just needed my rifle. With all my might I rolled over and crawled to my rifle. It was no more than five or six feet away but it seemed to me like it was miles away. I got to it and I used it to prop myself up to one knee. The pain was imbearable and my vision was blurry. I took the magazine out and grabbed a fresh one from my chest rig. The first mag was crushed. I threw it away and reached for another and I jammed it in my rifle. My CCO (close combat Optic) was cracked. I leaned up against the side of my destroyed rig and looked over the otherside. The lead humvee with my best friend mayes was under heavy fire and they were dishing it back from the turret and they had dismounted. A roadblock of sorts seemed to have been hastily created in front of us blocking them in. I could hear rounds passing above my head from the direction of the field. I thought I saw movement. I started firing. A magazine was gone in the blink of an eye. I went to find another in my flc but they were all crushed. I started feeling really dizzy. And suddenly a very bright light hit me and what felt like a hammer pushed me to the ground. I went unconscious and woke up again at Bagrams hospital. Thats it really.

Glad to hear you're alright. That's like when my uncle told me about the first time they ran into NVA in '67.

That is quite a story there Corey thanks for sharing that with us. Glad your back and getting better. That rotator cuff will take awhile so slow goes it for now. The good thing is it will not keep your fingers from working so we hope to hear more from you.

Corey, good to hear from you again. We're glad you made it back to tell your story.
School is going to seem pretty dull after that. I hope you can keep focused and succeed with your studies. |

I'm in the national guard. So I drill once a month. I just got on a qrf team so I have rotations in which I respond to different state emergencies at a moments notice. And school is so boring but I am trying to get a slot to become a warrant officer and fly Blackhawks. But thanks guys.

I was thinking back when you first started talking about enlisting and we told you we were proud you wanted to make a difference. We are still proud. And I know back then, nothing really prepares you for what lies ahead. All the could bees and what ifs were running thru your mind and then the next thing you knew, you were there, right in the middle of it all. Wondering what in the world you got yourself into and was it all gonna be ok. Now, your home, thank god, recouping and preparing mentally for whatever lies ahead. But, you did it soldier. You went and you did it. I and many others thank you for your service. And, I wish you much success in your future endevours. Whatever that may be. Cheers!

Corey my brother, it is my considered opinion that the Purple Heart should be ranked as the highest military decoration. Anyone who's been 'over there' knows that awards for valor are often subjective, and countless acts of heroism and gallantry go unnoticed and unreported.
In my book, there is no higher position in our society than that held by anyone who took the oath, stood in the void, and was injured. I salute you.
