It has everything to do with your environment, or the environment you expect to find yourself in at a given time. The season makes a huge difference as well, and you may find yourself swapping out some items as the seasons change. My daily carry bag, as well as the extra gear kept in my truck are geared toward survival in the city, and toward getting home. Not much use for a snare or a fishing rig here. If I were in a more rural environment the stuff my vary considerably. Though your basic needs may be more or less the same, how you go about satisfying them may be radically different based on the environment. The daily highs here in the summer can be 85 degrees higher than the winter lows. I have to change out some things accordingly.

Basics include plenty of water, and a way to carry and make safe a lot more. Really good footwear is a must. You never know when shank's mare is all that's going to get you where you're going. Good quality tools - knife, multi-tool, etc. More than one good quality flashlight. Any essential medication. Extra eyeglasses if you are so afflicted. Cash. Extra clothing for winter. Extra water, sunscreen, hat, bandana, etc. for summer. The list goes on much farther than you can carry it...

That's an excellent idea. I was an NBC Specialist in the Army but they didn't teach us any secondary backups for our issued gas masks. They made sure we understood the importance of having ours nearby at all times and making sure it was kept clean as well.

netexasemt, there aint no backups depending on the agents

CS no worries swap ya filters , you may get a bit "stingy" but thats ok

blood reagents or transcutainious nerve agents ( most of the persistant ones are transcutainious ) , no hope other than making a clean area , but one transfer and its atropine all round

stuff like mustard gas or chlorine based you clear out of the area and change , but its not likely to be fatal if you dont ,
the troops on the western front swapped over their filters when they got wet the gas was so thick , most of then did ok , a few ( lots actually , but compared ) fouled up the change over and got a lung full , , but its doable

and making a positive pressure area tent is not hard , 4-6 filters set up on a intake over 2 Computer fans is enough to keep a 11x11 ( army ) tent as a positive air pressure area

here if anything it'll be CS or a variant D2-11 or similar ( puke gas)

but if i'm smart i'll never need em as they'll never figure where i am to use it ..
