Silencer/Suppressor - The Firearms Forum

OK I am confused. Is there a difference between the two and if so what is it.

In the past couple of years I have seen several air rifles with suppressor and more recently a Savage 22LR with a threaded barrel. I thought that silencers and suppressors were illegal or is that just in the Peoples Republic of California.
If it's legal I want one!

Silencer is what the man that invented 'em (Hiram Maxim) named 'em, so to me they are silencers.

Suppressor is the modern word, because "it doesn't really silence the shot, so you can't call it a silencer". Yeah, whatever.

Silencers are regulated by the US government. They are registered and you have to pay a 200 dollar tax on each and every one you have. Some states, like California, will not allow you to have one - period. Some states, like Washington, will let you own one, you just cannot use it in the state. And some states, like the Great State of Florida think it's just fine that you can own anything your little heart desires and your wallet can afford.

So, it depends on where you live as to whether they are legal or not.

Well said alpo, another note is that you need also need a signature from your sheriff on the atf form

Or if you are/own a company,you can register firearm/suppressor to company avoiding fingerprints,cleo,etc....as pres of comp,you determine who/where it will be possessed...

Actually, I believe that has to be a "corporation", not just a company. You have to pay a fee to the state you are incorporated in, every year. Don't pay the fee, corporation goes away. Corporation goes away and there you are in possession of an unregistered NFA item.

i answered a add in a magazine in 1964 i was maybe 18 years old. it was for plans to build a maxim suppressor. guess who showed up at my dads door one night .The chief of police lived next door and he told the atf agents that i was a good kid and would never build a silencer. wrong made one for my sears 22 rifle. today i own a uzi with suppressor .mp40 mp44 22 ruger with suppressor . i sure did learn my lesson

before you spend the money do the research. Have one, love it, studied mfg's and bought local. MT anyway. Never had one regret. Ok yes I do. Regret I can't get another one .... til Chistmas!!!!

It's always seemed to me like the government requiring a "stamp" to own a suppressor is kind of like requiring a license to soundproof your home. Basically you are only reducing the volume level of a legal activity, and the right to do that seems to me as obvious as any other fundamental right.

Yeah they have reasons why they control suppressors in this way. They always have reasons. The Nazi's had reasons too. Marx and Engels had reasons. Yes, maybe suppressors make it easier for the criminal element to commit murder without being caught, but how does restricting me from owning one reduce crime?

Like anything else, criminals will always possess and use things banned or restricted to law abiding citizens. The fact that some choose to use things to facilitate commission of a crime should not affect me in any way. I'm not responsible for what anyone else does. To restrict my activities because of the illegal action of others is making me bear responsibility for their crimes. That isn't just, and logically it just doesn't compute.

A "moderator" is a silencer?

Aren't "moderators" those folks on TV who rant with their own ideas and never quiet anything?

I have pondered both sides of this argument for many years. As a Police officer, I definitely do not want guns in the hands of criminals, but I have no problem with a law abiding citizen owning a mini gun if he so desires to do so. Our system needs to be majorly overhauled. We need to totally lift restrictions of Gun ownership on law abiding citizens. At the same time, we need to make it a federal offense that carries a minimum sentence of 30 years for using a firearm in the commission of any felony.

I have spent some time in Germany with my old company and working over there been fortunate enough to go to hunting with my old boss. It was expensive to obtain a license to hunt but it was REQUIRED that all his hunting rifles have suppressors on them in order to be legal DUE TO THE FACT THAT SHOOTING RIFLES COULD CAUSE HEARING LOSS WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTION! This coming from one of the most socialist countries in the world that isn't a socialist country. They don't want everyone having a gun and do a great deal to restrict it to only those with the means to own them...but they haven't gone and taken the old ones away from everyone either. What amazed me was all his rifles caliber weapons had suppressors on them and didn't require a bit of documentation to be able to purchase or own.
