Ever drive around and see a dog rolling around on top of a dead carcass?
Why do you think they do this?

Our dog does this all the time. My wife hates it, but Olympas is just putting on her perfume. Which is usually Eau de Raccoon.

Reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where the male dog is at the front door of his date's house to pick her up for the night. She says "I don't know what you rolled in, but it sure does stink!"

Have you ever stopped to think about a dogs sence of smell? What stinks to us, must smell really good to a dog! And if you think your dog stinks, what do you smell like to your dog?

Yeah.
We had our Husky/Lab cross with us on vacation to the South West some years ago. She needed to do her business, so we pulled off the road - we were in a VERY remote desert location in NM - and let her out the door. She ran over a sand-dune, and after several minutes I walked over there to see what was taking so long. A VERY dead Armadillo, which she had thoroughly rubbed into her double-layer hair coat. We had to share the car with her for MILES before we came to a spot where we could bathe her - My current American Eskimo dog has this same attraction to turkey poop. As SOON as he smells some, he is on his back, rubbing it in to his nice white coat. I think you are right, Carver. They seem to LOVE this -

My wifes mom has a small dog named rags. he a chihuahua, but somehow came out with shaggy hair and giant ears, inbred i suppose. Hes a great dog and sylvia like to keep him clean and well groomed. but everytime Jack, my FIL, brings him out to the range he runs to the nearest pile of horsecrap and takes a dive. its just a dog thing. like sniffing each others butts.. its like us shaking hands.

We had to put my mother-in-law in a nursing home a few months ago, so we get to keep her dog. I have owned dogs all my life, and I have never experienced one like this one. In the two months that we have had him, he has managed to roll in his own poop not once, not twice, but THREE times.
The last time was the worse, and the only thing I could find to get the smell out was to use vinegar. I started picking the poop up, but he would still manage to find some that I missed. Now it has come down to us taking him out on a lead, which is going to be a pain this winter. The dog appears to be dumb, but he is mischievous, and is able to out smart me. When we first brought him home, he managed to open the cupboard door and help him self to the dog treats. We keep our kitchen trash in a lower cupboard, and he managed to open that one too. I had to put child locks on all the cupboards, and several weeks later he figured out how those work, and got into his treats again. (Treats and Trash have now been moved.) Now he’s just about figured out how the latch works on the gate in the back yard. I caught him jumping up and smacking the latch with his paw. I swear he was watching me go in and out until he figured it out. I put a guard over the latch so he can't hit it now. If he figures the guard out, then I'm going to have to pad lock it. I figure a key lock will be the best, because he will probably be able to figure out the combination! One thing I know is if he keeps rolling in poop, then I'm going to leave the back gate open for him!

Among the dogs I've had, it's been the hunting dogs that roll in nasties. Dogs that didn't included American Eskimo, Blue Heeler, Collie, Terrier mix, and a couple of German Shepard/Lab crossed. Dogs that did include Brittany, Brittany/English Setter cross, a couple of Labs, an Irish Setter, and a Black Water Spaniel. Seems to be a pattern there.
Best regards, BIGBOOMER

I always thought it was a way to bluff other dogs into thinking they had made a vicious kill.
Funny story... My brother and I were out mowing some commercial properties early one morning before sunup and there was a dead skunk in the road so we were trying to hurry and get the job done and get to a job where the air wasn't so thick. I was amazed when this damn dog came up and started rolling around on the skunk. I'd seen K9s do this sort of thing before, but not on a skunk... I couldn't take a comfortable breath and she was in heaven, it seemed. THEN!!! I watched with a huge grin on my face as she trotted over to my brother, the animal lover and he began to love on her, he patted on his chest and up she comes with her paws on his chest, he's hugging on her and scratching on her back and I finally realize that the smell from the skunk was so thick that he couldn't smell it on the dog right away. I sat back laughing my ass off as he finally realizes that "something don't smell right" on this dog. LOL! We all make mistakes, lesson learned! Don't go loving on just any ol' blonde bitch that comes prancing into your life... You don't know where she's been. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Don't know what to say here. My wife's Austrailian Sheppard does it all the dang time. Cow pies, coyote pooh, anything that she finds ends up on her. The stinkier the better. 'Course it's my wife's dog, but three guesses who cleans the crap off.
My last dog - a chow mix - never did it. In fact, one time he fell into a ditch on top of a dead cat. You ought to have seen the look on his face. Seemed like it disgusted him. It was part of a really bad day for him. It was 60 miles into a 90 mile road trip, and G-Man turned around and was going to walk back home....... |

Here's another dog question. Ya know how 2 female dogs in same house will fight to the death sometimes and then others get along just fine. Well, now we're down to one dog, had to shoot/bury my old friend a few weeks back and just have one 5 year old female plott hound for a house dog. Kids are off at school, only wife & me & dog & cat (thats in it's own world). So of late the female plott has started growling at the wife, doesn't want her to pet her, only give her food kinda thing. Dog follows me around, sits nx to wherever I am; won't even give the wifey the time of day; it's nutty. no joke. It pisses the wife right off, I tell her the dog must have been a loose lady in a past life.
Any you guys ever have a female house dog that doesn't want around any other women in the house? What did ya do besides shoot the dog and get another; as I ain't doing that just yet. |

Sorry to hear of the loss of your old faithful dog. It is fairly common for a dog to attach to one member of the household. If you start shunning her (the dog) some and your wife shows more attention, the dog will probably start warming up to her. You should certainly punish the dog anytime she acts aggressive toward any member of the household and everyone should praise her when she behaves.

I had a Cocker Spaniel that thought I was supposed to be her mate. We tried to bread her several times, but she would not let the male dogs get near her. When in heat she would sit, and stare at me for hours at a time! I don't know if she thought she was human, or she thought I was a dog???
