1911 fans please let me know about this. Watching American Guns last night and noticed the daughter has what looks like a 1911 in her holster fully cocked back. My question is how safe is this?

If you need it in a hurry, the way I'd go. I used to carry mine cocked and locked. I now use a Sig P220. Safer I think but still almost as fast a first round, almost. With training I think you're ok. Not the best condition for concealed carry on the streets perhaps but in a store under those conditions acceptable to me.

If you are going to carry a 1911 that is the best way. With the grip safety and slide safety you are ok.

My 1911 is cocked and locked 24/7. I have a good friend that carried with an empty chamber and a full mag. He said he was quick enough to rack the slide if the situation ever happened that he needed it in a hurry. I disagreed.
He said prove it so we faced a target and drew. I had two shots in the target before his slide was racked. Try it yourself. He now carries cocked and locked. The 1911 has a grip safety and will not fire until the pistol is gripped. It also has a thumb safety and it won't fire until the safety is moved to the off position. |

Cocked and locked is the only safe way to carry a 1911 that has it ready to fire quickly. You can carry it the idiot way, which is empty chamber and 1/4 cock, but if one does not have enough sense to carry a 1911 hot, maybe they should limit themselves to idiot resistant guns.

Cocked, and locked here, always, unless I'm cleaning, or reloading!

Wow. Thank you. I learned a lot already. I just saw that last night and thought that it may go off accidentally or intentionally.

Two safeties on the gun, and if the operator is educated in the use of the 1911, his mind, and skill sets, provide even other safeties! The gun can not be fired unless both the grip safety is depressed, and the hammer safety is disengaged! It won't go off even if you droped it cocked, and locked!

It's worth pointing out to those non-1911 owners amongst us that the primary safety (identified by Colt as the "safety lock") on a 1911 will only engage if the pistol is cocked - unlike some other semi-autos where the safety can be engaged whether it's cocked or not.

And a good 1911 is not going to go full auto on you and cause you to shoot up the roof that covers the pistol range either. I have seen three glocks go full auto without warning. One was in my hand. Its one thing if you are shooting a full auto Glock, leaned into it, and are ready for the recoil, but when you are shooting a mod 34 and gripping it loosely doing slow fire at 50 yard targets, it can be a b..ch.

..His face was speckled with burnt gunpowder and his shooting hand blacked around the web and fingers...With wide eyes, he hands me a 9mm case with half of the back section near the head blown out..."You ever see this happen before?, he asked...![]() I replied, "Shooting a Glock are ya." He Sez..." Yeah...How did you know?" ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Staying in context of the question...Cocked and Locked always...
