Reloading .303 Looking for O.A.L. - The Firearms Forum

Trying to find information to load British .303 using Sierra 150 Gr. .311 Spitzer Bullet want to know the O.A. L for it ?. Help, Using 4064 Powder

No offence intended, but if yer gonna reload with Sierra bullets, get a Sierra manual. No guessing, no "close enough" loads, you get the tolerances for the exact bullet used...

From the Sierra 5th Ed manual:
150gr SPT
COAL 3.075"
I can cross-reference data from the Sierra manual for you if you post up what powder you're using.
My recommendation would be IMR4064, but IMR4895 or Varget would be good alternates.

Not sure what powder or what manual you're using for loading data but the Hodgdon online data center has data for the Hornady 150gr. http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

The max COAL for the .303 is 3.075"...this is a general COAL measurement for magazine functioning, not because the bullet contacts the rifling. Anything longer than that and you'll have feeding problems from the magazine. You will have to seat a lot farther out to get a spitzer type bullet to contact the lands since the SMLEs have a rather long leade for the older 174gr bullet loadings which does have a longer profile than the 150gr bullets available.

Okay, I missed that you're using IMR4064...

From the Sierra 5th Ed:
#2300 .311" 150gr SPT 3.075"

IMR4064
38.0 - 2300fps

New Sierra Loading books do not list this bullet or should I say they do not list it on thier web sight.

Call Sierra customer service they will tell you anything you want to know about load data. In fact any component mfg. or company that has a reloading manual will do the same many of them send you a PDF file or scan of the data to go along with it.

By the way good bullet I shoot it in my 54r when I shoot J bullets.

It's under the Pro-Hunter line between the #2305 and #2310 125gr and 180gr .311"s.

I have the 5th Edition Sierra, which although it's a little dated (2003) it is their current manual.
I've been waiting for #6 to arrive but I haven't seen anything definite in the Sierra newsletters about a release date yet.
