Excellent pictures. Such fascinating machines. It's amazing how things have changed over the decades.

Great pics! It's funny though. I actually came into this thread expecting it to be 'steam punk' stuff. I guess I have been hanging around with the young crowd too much! haha

Wow. That would have been awesome to see in person. Hmm, steam engines for long term survival, interesting thought.

Several years ago, on a cool rainy afternoon, I was sitting at my computer when I heard an unmistakeable sound that I had heard many times before as a child...but not since I was 5 or 6 years old...

I grabbed my trusty camera, jumped in the truck and raced down the road a few miles where I knew I could get a passing view and take a few pics...

As a child, I remember it was 'an event' to see a diesel-electric engine come through town...We kids would talk about that for days... This old engine is based in New Orleans and was making a promotional run to Shreveport...I was glad I heard the whistle and old enough to know what it was a steam whistle when I heard it.

Nice pic, Duke. There's nothing quite like the sound of one of those. I used to live by a town, up north, that had a couple that they did regular runs for the tourists and locals that love the nostalgia. Some of them longer with dinner and a "murder mystery" to solve. I love that sound myself. You just don't want to park too close to where they go by unless you like a bunch of soot all over your vehicle.

They have a swell steam show every fall in Jacksonville, Illinois. I rarely miss it.

We had an old steam tractor in my home town once a year they would fire it up and run it. I don't think they do that anymore it just sits there. Not even sure what kind it is.

Here is a google maps link to where it sits.

That little homemade engine does kind of look like a moonshiner`s dream.
