Winchester Model 88/100 grip end cap
I did a search within the forum, and hope I'm not revisiting a topic that has been discussed in great detail and that I'm missing it somewhere within the site, but here goes (figured this would be a good spot to post it but if not, I apologize in advance).
My question relates to the pre 64/post 64 Winchester Model 88 lever and model 100 automatics, and specifically as to what is the correct end cap on the grip portion of the gun. I own a pre-64 model 88 in 308 cal. that has a basic metal end cap with a screw in the middle of it. I also own a post 64 model 100 in 284 caliber, and the end cap on this gun has a raised design in the metal. I have also seen some of these guns that have a red W in the end cap. Does anyone know if the end caps for these guns were specific to the model, to the caliber, to the year of manufacture? I have searched this topic on the web and have not been able to get a detailed answer, and when looking at the guns in person or on auctions, it seems many of them from the same model will have different end caps. Just wanted to see if someone could help shed some light on this one. Thanks
