.17 cal I think I want one in a Marlin 917 , some questions.

How long has the .17 been around?

Rim or center fire?

Whats the common name for the .17? point one seven, one seven, seventeen

Any Marlin 917 owners whats the scope on the 917?

I have the Marlin 917vs. It is the stainless steel model with a heavy barrel. It fires a rim fire 17 HMR cartridge based on the 22 magnum. Bullet sizes range from 17 to 20 grain. It is a real screamer and very flat shooting. The wind will play havoc on it though.

If I remember if you zero 1" high at 100 yds you are good for point blank rang out to 147 yards. It would be best to research the prior statement though.

I like mine a lot and it shoots groups under 1/2 at 50 yrds. I have a Simmons 22 MAG scope on mine that is 3-9 power.

Thanks Jeff , I like the long shots we have a 125 yard range the 917 with a good scope should get me a nice tight group at 125 yards?

Wiki says the .17 came out in 2002 , no wonder I never heard or seen a .17..

My uncle also has a Marlin 917. Lots of fun and VERY accurate with almost no recoil. He uses it to control jack rabbits on his property.

I have both a 17 and 22 mag. The 17 is the most accurate with 1' or less groups at 100 yards. The low bullet mass means that it is beat used for critters around woodchuck size out to 150 yards. It would be marginal for anything fox size and really not a good coyote round. ( you will hear exceptions to this statement). Ammo is around the 22 mag price as it is really a necked down 22 mag.
As far as wind effects it is LESS affected by wind due to its speed causing it to be in the air less time..
If you want an accurate round to dispatch smaller critters and to hit bottle caps at 100 yards try the 17

I have 2 rifles chambered the 17HMR. Henry GoldenBoy and the Savage 93BTV. The Savage will be just as accurate as the Marlin,just saying!

re the 17hmr as being for small critters,check out the internet for them being used as a hog gun.i have seen numerous shot right behind the ear and go down like they were hit by a mac truck. old semperfi

Not actually.....the 17HMR is a poor performer in windy conditions due to both the ballistic coefficient and sectional density of the the small 17-20 grain bullets, less flight time does not apply, but when the wind stops blowing this little caliber really shines.
