I agree Deputy Dog. If I had a spider of that size in my house I'd really consider AT LEAST .22 rat shot to use on it! Sheet rock is easy enough to repair.

Everything that grows in Australia is weird, dangerous and oversized.

ponycart, If I found a spider that big in my house it would be no 22 nothing, it would be a 12 gauge with an ounce and a 1/8 of 8s. Then I would fix the drywall, carpet or what ever, but the spider would be gonzo.

As far as spiders go, it is a beauty. You don't have to believe this, but what we call common house spiders, are that big here. Not harmful, just spooky.

After dad's reaction, the kid will probably be terrified of all of them.

Unfortunately , the brown recluse ,or "fiddleback" spider is extremely common here. They also love to get into clothing or any dark place(hence the name recluse) to hide.I took down my shop apron last year to do some work and after I got it all tied up, a fiddleback dropped out the bottom! I check all my hanging cloths or stored ones verrrry carefully now! I actually prefer to see a Blackwidow as they make a very easily recognizable web.

There is not even the most remote chance that I would EVER get that close to a monstrosity like that. Make me nauseated just thinking about it. In fact there's no way I'd live anywhere where such a creature exists.

Thumbs up Re: Don't play with spiders...

My Florida spiders ain't quite as big, but my .22 revolver now has six to it's credit. .22 Colibri does virtually no damage to the walls and ceiling. Hiting them 'on the run' gets challenging though, if you miss the first shot.

I hate big spiders.

Brown Recluse in N.C.

Quote:
The Brown Recluse

The Brown Recluse is also a poisonous spider native to North Carolina. They have a fiddle shaped marking on their back. Other non poisonous spiders have similar markings however. According to this site the Brown Recluse has 6 eyes in 3 sets of twos. I however to not intend to get close enough to one to count them!

The Brown Recluse is a night time hunter and like dark places to live. They live under woodpiles, rocks, and other cover when living outdoors. If they move in with you they tend to like bathrooms, basements and attics. They like to hide cardboard boxes and in clothes or shoes in closets, which leads to the most common reason of a human being bitten by one. The Brown Recluse actually leaves it web to hunt, so there are very possibly some prowling your home, while you sleep!

I'm fairly close to Asheville, NC but I'm in SC. The Brown Recluse does exist here but they are extremely rare. I've heard of only a handful of bites, ever.
