Just another reason why they couldn't pay me to buy a GM product.

Like most of the "green" products touted by the Liberati, most can't survive sans a whopping government subsidy ! Yet another example of the NELE's degenerative socialist economy ! >MW

A GM executive was quoted as saying that they(GM) put all their eggs in one basket with the Volt, that if this car didn't sell it might well be the end of GM.

Great! It took GM decades of research and development to come up with an electric car that will go 40 miles on a charge then the gas engine will kick-in making it just another hybrid. In typical politico-speak GM does not consider the Volt a hybrid because the gas engine does not drive the rear wheels directly, rather it drives an alternator that supplies electricity to drive the wheels, a much less efficient manner of energy conversion than "real" hybrids. So, basically GM is asking 40K for a less efficient hybrid than they already produce. Such a deal!

For thousands less you can buy a Nissan Leaf, a true all electric car with no gas engine back-up that will travel 100 miles on a charge. Good luck with your rectal vision GM and good luck with selling Volt's.

Greg Martin doesn't know what he's talking about. America didn't get where it is by "matching" what other countries Govts. do, We became great in the past by leading.
So what if other Govts. do something that isn't viable commercially, that's never been our schtick, and it's stupid from every conceivable angle.

I have owned many GM products and currently have two older GM's in my drive way. With the Obama take over of GM, the lame stream media carefully ignored the fact that the bankruptcy laws were specifically changed to accomodate the GM unions.

In bankruptcy there is a "pecking order" of who takes losses and how much. Starting at the top are 'Secured Creditors, followed by un-secured creditors followed by bond holders followed by stock holders with employee groups at the bottom of the pile. Obama and the democrats changed the law so that their beloved unions would be placed at the TOP of the pecking order. The unions took cuts, as everyone does in bankruptcy, but no where near what they should have taken. Now, the BOND holders and Stock holders got raped and lost much more than they would have under the old law.

As a result of Obama, GM is now "Government Motors"! After their reorganization, I wrote a letter to the CEO and Chaiman of the Board of GM and stated that even though I have owned GM cars for 40 years, I WILL NEVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, BUY ANOTHER GM PRODUCT. I never received a response back however, I suspect there are others that feel as I do.

BTW, GM was pressured by the Obama administration into developing the VOLT to support his GREEN initiatives. It cost a fortune to develope and costs $40,000 PLUS to own. It will be an total failure for GM. ALL PAID FOR BY U.S. TAXPAYERS!!!

Watched this story before I went fishing this morning. The cost of 480,000 plus, to tax payers who involuntary donated 6 billion to GM for the volt, will never be reconciled. Ask the dems if they care.

The repubs are just as much to blame, if not more. Calling themselves conservative and then constantly voting in the opposite direction.

GM said they fell short by only 4000 Volts from their projected sales goal. They did manage to sell close to 1000 units tho. But it looks like over 700 units were purchased for government use.

The tank on the Volt is 9.3 gallons. With a 300-mile maximum range, and 30 miles on the battery before the gas engine kicks in, you get around 29 mpg. And it only costs you $40,000! 9.3 gallons in my Hyundai will get me about 400 miles down the road, and for almost 1/4th the price! Still our Government will back a bad deal, cause they made it!

I currently own a Volkswagen just because I got a really good deal on it in Milwaukee a few years back. They're nice cars, the only downside is that once it starts getting old and needs repairs, the parts are pretty expensive. Many of the things on it are also built in such a way that you cannot work on it yourself. You have to take it to a dealer who has all the special gizmos and tools for it. Sadly, this is becoming a fact of life with more and more automobiles. Not like my dad's 1970 Chevelle where all you needed was some US and some metric tools and you're set to go. Even the 1995 Honda Civic I had before this didn't require all these special kinds of tools to repair and/or maintain things.

If I was going to buy an American made vehicle, I would most likely buy a Ford. I just think their cars look better and it seems like they aren't very expensive and include quite a few nice features. My uncle owns a new Focus and really likes it and he's owned Chevrolet in the past, had a Ford Taurus before that.

The problem with those Volts, and a lot of those electric cars like Prius and stuff - sure they're fuel efficient. But when I hit the road, I want to be able to go fast enough to be able to merge onto the highway. I want to do 0-60 in 5 seconds, not 5 minutes.

Jeez I might as well buy my '95 Civic back. I think that had a 12-gallon tank. I sold that car about three years ago, but when I checked the fuel economy on it, it got around 30 mpg on a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. This was also the 125-hp VTEC motor. My buddy had a '91 Civic hatch with the 89hp engine and that got about 35 when we checked it.

I think I paid $8,000 for my Civic used. My buddy paid $1,500 for his.

These "green" cars are not a good investment at all. They're just marketed as such so that "progressive" people will buy them.

Both our Hondas were probably faster than those Chevy deathtrap Volts too.

I wish they would start making leaded gasoline again so that we can get our big block V8s back.

Some of these new small cars will scat! From Hyundai alone, there are at lest three cars that will blow you away. The Sonata with the large motor will cruise all day at 120+, with petal left over! I've had one up to 130, and it wanted more! There are two more models that puts 429 hp at your command.

Default Latest on the Volt --- Major $$$$ LOSS!

This article says it all. GM losing $40,000+ on EACH volt????? Holy crap!!!

Insight: GM's Volt: The ugly math of low sales, high costs

Nearly two years after the introduction of the path-breaking plug-in hybrid, GM is still losing as much as $49,000 on each Volt it builds, according to estimates provided to Reuters by industry analysts and manufacturing experts.

gh,

My sources stated $49K per volt, but what's a grand when billions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled into DNP crony capitalists and supporters ?

I also see reports claiming Cadalliac's STS model has computer software problems sufficient to halt sales ! Add to this GM's continuing to field two "luxury marques" Caddy and Buick - essentially again competing with itself - and maintaining a GMC truck line offering nothing but a rehashed Chevy !

IOW its the "same old GM" still railroading the way it wants with our dollars ! No wonder the "Demoncrats" went after Paul Ryan so hard on his account of what happened in his home town ! >MW
