looking for some opinions on a security six - The Firearms Forum

the local gun shop around here has a security six for 349$ it is kind of beat. the grip is worn and what not. the metal is worn too. what do you guys think?

I don't know exactly where 'around here' is located. Prices do differ in various parts of the country.

Having said that, I think $349 is somewhat high for 'kind of beat'. Security Sixes are really decent revolvers; but you might be able to bargain him down a bit. It depends on your evaluation of how much you think you can pay versus how much you want it.

i live in pennsylvania and yea the revolver isnt in great condition. like i said it is worn, and i havent seen one in some time. i might go back tomorrow and barter with him on the price.

A Security Six is a fine gun, but it's closer to a 250 dollar gun than a 350 dollar one. Especially in "kinda beat" condition. I wouldn't pay over three for one period, unless it was brand new.

I wouldn't buy a beat up magnum on the outside..... I'd wonder how it was treated on the inside although there's alot of steel on a Security six.

hmmmm. i am not an expert on revolvers but as they get used i believe they can slip out of time a bit and then needs some gunsmithing. if there is that much wear on it i would question this as i believe it has probably had alot of rounds thru it.

I live in the western PA area and security six's should not be that hard to find used. I would wait and look for a better one at a better price. Why bargain him down if the gun is in poor shape? Wait and get a better gun!

yea good point!

i found one a little bit north of me (macungie) but its about an hour drive.

I would imagine that if the "kinda beat" was cosmetic like most PD guns it would be OK.
Still think of it as a 250-275 gun though.

My sentiments exactly, I like the sec6's and they're great guns. Finding one in very good condition for that price won't be too hard, just gotta be a little patient for the right deal.

You may want to browse Guns America or some of the other gun auctions and see what they are asking for a comparable firearm....If in good shape, $250 is decent price..beat to hell, would substancially lower that price...Buds selling new for $465...

I suggest......just spend the extra $$$
and get a brand new GP100 [noone has farted on the seat]

That being said, a security six for $300 is doable, nice gun,
but only you can determine the actual condition with your
own eye, not any of us on a forum.
When buying revolvers, check full lock-up, new or used [see sticky], timing,
interior bbl condition, overall condition............
but a Ruger or Smith......the absolute last thing on my mind.....
would be worrying about timing issues.

our gun shop had a 95% er blued 6 inch for $275. I almost bought it. but it had pachmeyer grips and i like origianals.

This is where knowing what to look for in a used gun is essential. Cosmetic condition doesn't mean much to the overall condition as to function and safety. I've bought used guns for very little due to cosmetic condition and had them reconditioned, then resold them for a good profit. Looks aren't everything. A lot of cop guns look used but are often shot very little, making them a good buy at the right price. The Security Six is a fine revolver, and with GP-100's around $500.00, a good functioning Security Six at $250 could be a good deal.

The PA State Police carried Ruger Security Six'es as issue/duty revolvers in the 1970s and as such, there were, at one time, quite a few available as police trade ins, in PA. That was certainly QUITE a few years ago, but IMHO, the asking price is a bit much for one that appears to be in "rather poor" condition. The Six's (Speed, Service and Security) are EXTREMELY well made, strong revolvers, but even so, and given that I am also located in PA and am "somewhat familiar" with regional prices, the asking price is excessive (remember, I am basing this on your description, as we have no pictures to evaluate.) I personally wouldnt offer much more than $250 myself, and if you are "shopping" with a retail gun shop, its actually not terribly likely that you can get the seller down THAT much. If you have your heart set on a Ruger Six model, I too, suggest that you watch the online auction sites and Guns America, and also, I would suggest that you consider attending a few of the PGCA shows in your area, which are usually in excess of 1500 tables. I am not sure if they are currently being held at the Monroeville Expo Mart or the old Murphys story (empty) located on Route 30 in Greensburg, as I stopped attending regularly a few years ago, but due to the sheer size alone, these shows are generally a good place to locate examples of nearly ANY firearm, even obscure ones, that one would want to locate. These PGCA shows are held every other month, (6 per year). You can "google" the PGCA to find the dates and the current location for these shows. Happy hunting!

Jeep - sorry for the confusion - I read the thread, but didnt differentiate between your posts and TomInGreen's - you are located in Eastern PA - in your case I would suggest that you look for the shows located in King of Prussia, as there is one particular promoter that holds equally large shows (1200-1500 tables), 2x a year there. Sorry for any confusion - I used to drive to the PGCA shows from the State College area 3-4 times a year because they were such large, excellent shows, but for you, in your part of the state, that would be an almost prohibitive drive and a very tiring round trip!!
