    “Mission.... Tooth-Fairy”
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many missions either start or end in a great hurry…in smoke and fire…..a very few start slow and are executed slow……still in smoke and fire….

This one starts and ends in peace… tranquility.. and languorous monotony….well maybe not the last thing … but slow anyway….

    This is one of them….

Word comes to us that there is a need for RTO’s that also know DF & Morse (direction finding & Morse code)..

Well…. Rundles & I are the guys for the job…..so we volunteer (I know… I KNOW…. remember that I am still young and stupid here)….

The mission is simple…. Chop out to this LZ (can’t remember the name) and link up with another chop to ride up into the mountains….“You will be met & guided by a Capt. Robinson and his team, just follow orders and be home next Thursday”.

OH GREAT a week in the bush…. Damn I just came OUT of the bush…

Oh well….. mission load seems to be light…. no extra ammo, just extra canteens and salt & purification tabs…..and look at this will you??? LRRP food…. ain’t seen but one of those before… we have been eating C’s dated 1944 for so long…. this stuff is new to us….….….Hummmm

“OH yeah… also… go over to supply and get your uniforms…. You won’t be going as Eagles”….

Well just what the hell ARE we going as??…. Hot Dog venders????

“Oh shut up Rundles…..we’ve dress different before”…

“Yeah??! Well don’t remind me about Panama again OK??”….(and that’s another story)..

“by the way Sgt.….just what is the mission??”

“A tooth-fairy mission” and walks away like THAT explains it all in detail…..

Shaking our heads, we mosey over and tell the Sgt. in supply that we are the guys going on the mission… the “Tooth-fairy” mission…. He starts laughing….

    We BOTH start to worry……

He meanders back into the maze of connexs and is gone for about fifteen minutes……

We lounge against the cool steel wall under the make-shift roof… and light up…. no sense in hurrying…. he doesn’t seem to be in a hurry…so why should we??

He comes back and throws the uniforms on the counter….two sets of VN Tiger pattern fatigues…..

We have seen them… but always on SF dudes or South VN rangers and the like…..

This might turn out to be a really neat experience… or so we HOPE!! And you KNOW how VN is… the sun comes out and burns you or it clouds up and rains like hell and soaks you…..or it rains steel… so… “A neat experience” is said with very serious skepticism. You either say it that way (skeptical) or assume that the guy who said it is a Beserker……in which case you try to stay as far away from him as you can…

After changing and rechecking our loads… we start over to the pads….. Number 16 is our today’s……. when we get there… there is no one at the chop and the engine is cold…..we ask one of the mechanics if this is the right chop for the mission and answers “yeah…. But it won’t be going for another four hours”….

Now… what do you think we did to pass the time…….go over to the NCO club and drink??….. go over to the PX and shop???

Nope…. we promptly dropped everything and under a slightly shady spot and went to sleep…..very easy thing to do lately… on the run all the time……the tent is always HOT and the other guys stink… they never go out or go anywhere…(OK so maybe its us but I’m the one telling this story..so THEY stink!!) … so… straight to sleep we go …..man that feels good…..to have nothing to do for a few hours…..

I dream of a small brown women with dark black eyes and perfectly small assemetrical breasts on a wonderfully white sand beach in Panama with cold, cold Cerveza in one hand and a perfect breast in the other….…

WELL!!?? Wouldn’t you???? But that is another story….. and I digress….sorry…

We are wakened by the noise of the engines beginning to wind up……you know the sound… the whining of the turbine a few seconds before the rotor even begins to move…..we see that the ground mechanic is in the chop… making preliminary checks before the flight crew arrives…the others are loading supplies onto it… looks like medical cases….the three foot long by about 25 inches wide and 10 inch deep OD aluminum cases…. with all sorts of latches all around them….YEP medical supplies….

The flight crew arrives and the flight chief takes our orders from us and studies some papers he has on a clip board…. He seems satisfied that we are who we say we are and motions for us to mount up…..about six more guys show up… more Eagles… but they say nothing to us… they must think that we are SF or something… they ALL try to sit on the other side of the aisle from us…. weird feeling……

Rundles & I don’t know who these guys are anyway.. so we just go with the flow….

Engines is at full power now… no one can hear each other… the flight crew has their “ears” on and are talking amongst themselves….no one seems to be in a hurry today…. Well… that’s good… I am tired of always moving fast and low anyway….I am beginning to enjoy this trip….

    So far anyway…

    Wait…………

We must have sit in that chop for an hour before it starts to rev up…. the rotors are beginning to rotate and after a few seconds you can hear the engine jerk and connect with the Jesus Nut and the fat little bird hops into the air…… but it just hovers a few seconds like a pigeon getting its bearings … then it starts to climb oh so slowly and turn toward the northwest…..

The THUMP, THUMP, THUMP steadys down and we are being lulled to relax…. Akin to being in a soft … slowly vibrating chair… the pilot is not in a hurry…. no one seems to be today…..we doze…….the others don’t…..

After some time… we see that we are well over the first two sets of low hills…. and heading up a long valley…. I don’t recognize it… but it is beautiful…. no burn marks, craters and such…. the bird shifts slightly to the left (west) and starts to climb again….

The pilot seems to be following a river that climbs up the mountains ahead….the bird is only moving at about ½ speed….. not use to this…. all of my other trips were done at full speed and quick sharp movements…. this bird flies like a gull … not in a hurry at all….this mission must be a cake walk…..

    Jeezz… I hope I didn’t jinx it with that thought!!!…..

Rundles has been trying to talk to the guy next to him…. but the guy looks nervous and says almost nothing…. Rundles looks at me and shrugs his shoulders…… wonder why these guys are like that?? oh well…. not our concern…..

The flight chief gives us the thumbs up and points out of the bird…. down at an LZ set out in the middle of nowhere….
(OK,..OK… I know….so ALL the LZ’s where out in the middle of nowhere)…..this LZ seems to have an Atry unit close by….. and we decend… but… again…. not sharply… swiftly…. we just kinda… float down… for want of a better description…..I think that I could get use to this rate of travel… it seems to remove a lot of worry from you…

We land now… a real soft one….and Rundles and I are out like a shot!!…. not so easy changing modes in mid-stream I guess.. the others look at us like we are nuts…

    Well…we are….

We are directed to the Ops tent and make our presence known…. the Specialist behind the little field desk seems disturbed that neither one of us is his replacement….and we are shown to a tent to stay in until called for…..

No one in the tent…..so we stand outside and observe our new found oasis (now don’t laugh…it COULD happen)….seems lunch is still being served..”shall we??”… “why yes, I believe we should”…. we joke…trying our best to imitate the two little chipmunks that Disney has in cartoons…..(cannot remember their names… but we seem to fit their personalities sometimes…)

So we meander (NOTE : the word meander….. we seem to be doing that a lot on this one… we kinda LIKE it…..but I digress..) over to the mess area and try to get fed.….. as we are getting our food, others there are staring at us….I think it just that we forgot that we are in Tigers and they are not…. “Don’t worry about it” I shrug…. But Rundles says “look around…. what’s wrong with this picture?”….

No one is packing…. only us….. NOW I start to get worried again…..no normal for an LZ to have people who are not packing at all!!…..

Eating was uneventful…. and pretty much tasteless too….. powdered eggs and SOS seems to be a universal in the Army and whatever the “Meat-o-the-day” was… well…. we eat it anyway…. getting real tired of C’s from the 1940’s (I said that didn’t I?..sorry)..when we sat down to eat (they had real folding tables to sit at—that was a joy!!).. others moved away from us…

“This is getting’ real bothersome!” says Rundles….

”Pay no notice to them” says this really huge guy standing over us… he is in Tigers too. “these guys are not use to seeing us here…. Hey…. I’m Billy-Bob….Billy-Bob Coburn… from Arkansas, how yall doin’?; Yall going on this trip??”

Ok…. I know what you are thinking…. I made this up didn’t I…. Well…. honest to God I didn’t…. this guy was 6x6 at least and his uniform looked like it was painted on… he had short but shaggy blonde hair and if the movie “deliverance” had been made yet..THIS GUY would play the lead!!! The only thing missing was a banjo or a guitar…. Wait…. I spoke too soon… HE HAD a guitar……. couldn’t see it cause it has hanging over his back…. which was about a wide as a double door on a church….

“I’m the security leader for this trip… and these guys are my team”….waving his hand over and to the rear of us….

    “damn” Rundles says real low..

We turn and there are about fifteen of these guys standing there… didn’t hear them come up behind us at all….

Every one of them have at least two types of firearms on them ….large rucks like I had never seen before, half of them carried two LAWS, one had a 60’ , two had Thompsons, two had 79’s and every one of them had and side-arms too!!…ALL of them were at least six foot and 220 to 250 pounds…. muscles I didn’t know humans had…

I suddenly felt small and puny….. (WELL I WAS…next to THEM!!)

“hey.. yeah..,. I’m Long this is Rundles…. we are RTO’s”

“glad you could come (as if it were a major privilege and I , personally, was beginning to have my doubts)….our RTO is laid up…

    OK…OK…. NOW I GET NERVOUS……

    “OH?… what’s he laid up with….I stupidly ask…

“A really serious case of….R&R…….”and he breaks out in a really large toothy smile…but with a little girls laugh!!!! “Hehehehehehehe”..

OK.. I am still nervous…..but I think I like this guy….maybe I shouldn’t pay too much attention to my doubts.. Ya think??

Rundles strikes up a conversation with a couple the human tanks and they break into small groups and then talk turns to the mission…..

Seems that there was a plane crash some months ago, right up the mountain from were these guys had been helping some Yards work on a well & a power dam…. The wreak was spread out over several hundred yards with the tail on the other side of the ridge, the body right on top of the ridge and the nose down the other side….

“so.. why is this wreak important”…

“well… it was an ARDF aircraft and the equipment still works… so we need you RTO’s to operate it until our guys come back from R&R…. that… and…..”

    “yeah….. and what??”

“and the village Chief may not let you near it…”

“and just why is that?” with my hair on the back of my neck rising….

    wait.....

“look… these people are somewhat primitive & superstitious… if their shaman doesn’t like either of you.. then we will miss several opportunities for getting some good “cuts” done….AND we have to encrypt our transmissions so that the other guy can’t get a picture of what we are doing..that’s why we asked for RTO’s that had BOTH ARDF/GRDF & Morse skills”

“but…. How in the hell can this work if it’s crashed?” I ask…. I couldn’t see what good ARDF is when it ain’t in the air!!

(I think I might explain here…. ARDF Airborne Radar Direction Finding…GRDF… same but ground based…didn’t work as well . ARDF was our primary way of finding these creeps by finding out where their radio transmitters were…. If you could narrow it down to a small patch of land… you could nail them or at least maul them really good)…

“The unit is pointing right, smack dab up the middle of the valley.. and that’s where they have several routes down into the II corp area… and they like to stop down there and rest for a few days before going on…. We hope to find them… and help them get a serious taste of steel…. If not dirt salads…”

I think I do like this guy… I like the way he talks….. The others all stand up and I see that an officer has joined them…..no insignia though… just his mannerisms give him away….at least with us…

“I’m Capt. Robinson.. the OIC for these missions”

    Missions…. Plural…. So they do this a lot!!….

I see you guys have met and talked..good… all of you get that hooch over there for tonight and we will leave in the morning… Sgt. Have you done the equipment check?”

    “yes sir”

“and how about the mission supplies that should have come in with these guys?”…

“no sir, we will go check it out right now..”

    “good….see you in the morning”

and with that he promply excuses himself.

“come on… we need to see what you brought…. “

He gives a hand signal to the group and two of them follow…. These guys obviously work together A LOT!…

We get back over to the Ops tent and he inquires about the supplies that should have been on our chop….

“over there” says the same wish-you-guys-were-my-replacement clerk and points to a corner…. “the ones that came in today are on top”..

We spend the next hour toteing this chests over to the hooch we had been assigned to.

“say… what’s in these things anyway” I ask..

“just medical supplies…. When we get up to the village… the medical team should be there and this trip the Chief Tooth Fairy will be in town too”

“OK… so waddia mean by “tooth-fairy”… (I didn’t get the connection I guess)

    “the dentist.. tooth-fairy get it?”

    ‘Yeah”…

    (continuing....sorry for the delay...))

    so now…. I REALLY feel like a young idiot…. OH well…..

the night seemed to go too fast… it was the first time in a while that Rundles and I had slept so well…. no attacks… no incessant Ariel flares, no nothing!! just the sounds of the forest/mountains…….we awoke refreshed and ready to go…

the morning breakfast was just slightly worse than the evening meal…. But… food is food….

Billy Bob directed us to the chop that we were to ride on and he and some of the team where with us and the other two chops had the rest of the group….plus a really old looking local…..

It is really hard not to notice a person who looks like they are about two hundred years old, with no teeth and wearing only a breech-clout…. I assumed he was a guide of some sort or an interpreter….

Chops whine up and the rotors being to move… again… no one seems to be in a great hurry……

However….. the others are locking and loading all weapons…. Shit…. Guess I better follow suit…..

The ride is very uneventful…. just a ride in the country…. and beautiful country it was too…. This part of the mountains I had never seen before, especially from the air…. We must have flown through two or three dozen valleys and all the while we were climbing….my ears popped several times. Rundles couldn’t get his head cleared because he couldn’t get his ears to pop….this was a great ride!!!!

We descend now…. Twisting in and out of small valleys at a leisurely pace and darting between some really huge mountains…..and all the while….

    Guess what !!??

    NO fire from the ground!!!

Crewman gives us the two minute warning and points to the left…..at our landing site…. If you want to call it that….it was a small patch of clear ground on what looked like the side of a shear mountain!! The whole thing couldn’t be more than 50 foot by 50 foot!!! And this guy was dropping toward it a might bit faster than I thought was safe!!

But before I could gulp, yell, holler, or whatever….we are down… the team was out the door like a shot and took up defensive positions…. But as I got out… I couldn’t for the life of me figure why!! There must have been five hundred people scattered around us…. they just…. Well…. materialized out of the trees!…. didn’t see even one of them from the air…..the old guy with us started chattering and lead the Capt. off to someplace…

“we best stay here and unload” says Billy…..I considered that the right thing to do as Rundles & I were …. Well…. “strap hangers”…. If you will….so we helped get everything unloaded from the chop and it took off….. and them another one landed and we unloaded that one….. after two more came and went…. We sat down and took a water break…

    “Damn!!…. I can’t breath”!! says Rundles…..

“Ahh it’s just the altitude… you’ll get use to it”!!

The heat up here was almost benign… even thought it was supposed to be in the 90’s…it didn’t fell like it…..and Billy says that it gets real cold at night and when it rains hard too…..

I say no reason not to believe him …..

Kids were gathering around us now…. I begin to get really nervous…. The last time kids got too close to us .. two guys got hurt by a frag….and the time before that… several guys were hurt while riding in the back of duce-and-a-half……(But those are other stories)..but Billy seems to be enjoying it and starts to play kick-ball with some of them….

Rundles says..”hey is it safe to do that”?? “I mean… “

“Yeah… these kids are our friends… these kids.. up here on the mountain would rather see us here them those down there they call “Those below” in their language… but I can’t say it… we can ask the team interpreter how to say it in their language….”

(Note : I call him the interpreter here because I cannot remember his name)

“What do you mean “Their language”..and he laughs… “OH… they speak a completely different dialect up here… I’m not even sure they could speak to those below if they tried”!

Two kids come over and start pointing at Rundles and me and chattering among themselves… it was a soft, lilting language, I must admit… didn’t sound like the VN/Chinese/Thai at all….but I noticed that a couple of the older men could speak French….

One of the kids says something to me and Rundles and our interpreter says “He says…what’s your name”…

Rundles points to himself and says “Rundles” then points at me and says “Long”

I follow suit and point and myself and say “Long”…

And the kid starts getting really excited and starts talking louder & louder….gesturing and seems to be agitated about something I said…I suppose ….

“what the hell did I do??”

“nothing… seems your name is a same as one of his relatives over in another village…. He may think that you might be long lost cousin or something”…

All the kids run off to do something else and we are shown to small and dimly lit huts to sleep in… they all had hammocks in them… and that will mean a good nights sleep for me at least… I preferred them over cots or mats on the ground anyway…. the huts are amazingly clean looking… not like the ones I have seen “down below”… its dark now and I ask about guard duty… I didn’t want them to think that we would try to skip out in it…

“no….” says Billy laughing that little girl giggle again…”we don’t have to do that up here… our hosts will do that” and he exits to go to his hut….

Now I MUST tell you…. I did not sleep as well as I might have… something in the back on my mind screamed that SOMEONE SHOULD BE ON GUARD DUTY!!!!! ….. I slept fitfully… Rundles snored up a storm!!!

Morning comes and we start our walk up to the DF site…. It was only about a 30 minute walk and there was a trail that lead up to it now…. As I walked.. I could see that at one time… without this path… this was a grueling walk as the forest was thickest along the path and it would have taken two or three hours just to hack your way through it…

But… this was just a walk… a short… leisurely walk… with kids and old folks looking up from their play & work… they would always wave to you and smile up a storm… the kids would play tag and just run everywhere…..

Now, when we reach the crash, it looks like it has never been touched…. But when we went into it… you could see that a lot of work went into setting it up and making sure that everything worked just so… they had set up a small 1.5 kW in it to run the DF unit and some of the other gear that I had never seen before…..Rundles and I settled in to “doing our thing”…. And Billy had one of the guys start to teach us about their new encryption method so that we could send the reports as soon as the results of the DF were done…(will not go into that!!)…after about three hours, Rundles & I had the fixes in and transmitted and then it became so routine that we kinda started busying ourselves with fixes and cuts of our own…. Kinda like extra work just to see it we had found something of use….stuff that wasn’t on the Freq. list…

Lunch came and went… we were so engrossed with our new job and friends that we just forgot to go eat……

As sunset came we shut down and walked back down to the village …. Food had been set out for us…. rice, fish and some sort of beef…. I presumed that it might be either water buffalo… or maybe rat….never can tell in this country… it might have just as easily been cat or dog….. the lowlanders preferred cat and puppies…..

With dinner over and our daily reports filed with the Capt. The village seemed to slow down itself…. And there could be heard different kinds of music from different parts of the village….something we NEVER heard down in the low country…unless it was us doing it…

This first day and night had been work oriented… but now it was changed to “relax” oriented….the evenings were cool but not too cold… we did not have field jackets but our hosts soon provided us with some sort of poncho made out of palm fronds or something similar…. It seemed to keep out the rain/moisture but also a warn garment in the cold…and it let us blend in with our hosts… if a bunch of giants could blend in with a troop of midgets… they were much smaller than the lowlanders…..but I begin to see them as a very handsome people and that made their stature irrelevant.

This went on for about three days…. On the fourth day, along about mid-morning, the village was all excited about something…you could hear the commotion all the way up here…..So we decide to take and early lunch and see what was going on……as we entered the edge of the village we could see that a chop was inbound…. and it… like the one that brought us… was in no particular hurry either….

After it floated down and landed, the kids and … well it seemed just about everyone else was surrounding the chop…two officers got out…. And they it seems were the much touted and much heralded “Tooth-Fairies”… the military dentists that traveled a “circuit” dispensing medical help to anyone and everyone who needed it….

The whole village moved into the central courtyard (really just a big empty open area the used for ceremonies and such)…to formally welcome these two….that was the first time I saw what a mountain ceremony was… they seemed to have ceremonies for just about everything, but some of them were very elaborate.. and this was one of them…..

However…..Rundles & I went back to work and left them to their own devices…. A little later Billy and one of the team came up and informed us that we had been invited to sit in on tonight’s “Special” ceremony… something about a formal “welcome” for all of us….even if we had already been here for four days now….

Well… back to work……as the afternoon wore on I began to get really curious about some radio traffic I had been monitoring for a couple of days… nothing out of the ordinary…. just small unit traffic… can’t see anything special about it… just curious…. I ask Rundles to monitor it also for a while and I started encrypting our afternoon transmission….

The day wears on and waxes uneventful…. After our daily debriefing, we go and wash up … and Billy tells us not to eat because we will be expected to eat at the ceremony…

Evening comes and we find ourselves seated on one side of a very large circle…all the men are seated… there are now women in the circle…...in the center is a little dais surrounded by several fires… they will become bonfires as the evening wears on, I am sure of this because of the piles of logs all around the fires…..I guess that it will be a long ceremony.

The old women and young girls are passing out small bowls of rice now….with small chunks of fish in it…

“Hey look!” says Rundles… “Isn’t it that little guy that come with us??”.. and sure as hell, it is…. He is up of the dais speaking and of course, we have no idea what he is saying but he is chattering so fast it wouldn’t make a difference to us anyway….

As we eat and listen. the females come around the second time, this time they are distributing some sort of beverage…GOOD GOD THAT STUFF STINKS!!!…….but we drink anyway…. and yes… it was some alcoholic concoction

And yes… we are soon bombed!!!

Somewhere behind us music starts as the little guys keeps talking and the fires are getting higher…

    And DAMN!!! so are we!!….

Rundles is beginning to see things moving in his drink bowl….”you’re imagining things”….

“NO I’m not!!.. look for yourself”… so I look just to please him… I see nothing… it is too dark…but he says his drink has “Chunks” in it….. I start to ignore him…..

Now there are groups up dancing, nothing like I have ever seen before and it is way too hard to explain it here. It almost reminds me of those films you see in high school about the American Indian dances with a little bit of Australian Aborigine thrown in for good measure… neat to watch though….and the music does sort of lull you into it…

It was either the music or the fact that I have at least two sheets into the wind and the night is young yet….

I think Rundles just passed out…

    NO WAIT….

    Never mind…

He is out for the count……

Ever since I have known him… He has always been able to out drink me but I am forever hauling his sorry butt back to the barracks before I pass out…. Looks like nothing has changed on this trip either….Oh well…. that’s what friends are for….Besides, my upbringing had NO booze whatsoever… I even HATED beer for crips sake!!… however, while in Panama I developed this real love of Rum, Scotch and Cognac…sometimes all at once….

See…. That’s what happens when a Mid-western boy gets out of the farm/city and heads out into the world…..however….I digress….

There are more people dancing now and while I may be grooving on the music and stuff, that kid that was excited about my name the other day comes and stands in front of me and starts to chatter really loud and pointing at me…..I put my drink down and stand up as I am not sure WHAT is going on…. If I end up in a fight… he will win cause I AM REALLY BOMBED NOW!!! … he grabs my arm and tries to pull me into the circle toward the fire closest to us…

    I hold back..

“Just what the hell is going on??” I say to no one in particular…. Billy and the interpreter come up just then…I feel a little less worried now that they are here, but I have the feeling that I may have caused some sort of “Faux Pa”…

“Billy laughs (And did I mention that he has this really silly “Little girl” laugh that scares you!!??) and the interpreter says “Hey relax.. he wants you to dance with his sister….It seems that his family name is really the same as yours and it would be an honor if the “Western” family would dance with the “Eastern” family”….

    “Are you SURE??”

“Yeah.. no problem, not a problem at all”, and he gives me this weird grin and Billy laughs…..

    “Jeez guys…. I don’t know how to dance… I’m a Friend and we don’t dance”..

Billys face turns somewhat darker…”It would be am insult if you don’t dance with her.. AND the Shaman is watching now” and nods his head over his shoulder… and sure enough… that dude really WAS watching this…..

“Billy… you have to understand… dancing in my family is just NOT done… it’s too much like making love standing up and they HATE that!! especially in public for God’s sake!!”…

He looks at me again and I guess that I am just way too drunk to care.. ”I’ll try… BUT just don’t expect me to be good at it!!”

With that.. he laughs and I turn and nod “yes” to the kid and follow him ….walking, no…staggering out to the circle to meet his sister….

You know… when you meet someone new, especially a female, you can be a little nervous or at least apprehensive about the meeting….

I am too drunk to be concerned with meeting this person…. and ….OH……….my…….. God…….above……..she’s beautiful…… he says something to her and she looks up just so slightly to look at me….(I was told later that the women generally don’t look at mens eyes until either they are married or too old to be married)….she couldn’t be more than 14….but you know how Orientals are… you almost NEVER can tell their age just by looking at them… she could have been 40 or 14……

WELL THAT TOOK THE BLOOM OFF THE ROSE by golly!!!!!! Drunk….in the dark…. dancing (OK..OK.. so just TRYING to dance ) …with a beautiful girl….a dangerous combination for any young male…..

Jeez if I were from Alabama or Georgia she might be “marrin’ Kin” ya think???

    Sorry…. Couldn’t help that….but that is what I thought at the time….

Well… time were on everyone so as I get drunker & get less and less likely to dance ….or to move for that matter… I think my last thoughts that night were….”Gee the stars sure are bright up here”… and then oblivion…

The next morning… I can see the roof of this hut… and …OOHHHHH…damn my head sure hurts….this is undoubtedly the WORST hangover I have ever had (until a year later during my short-timers party-didn’t have time to do it while in country)..oho …. Man it took me ten minutes just to get up and try of go soak my head….and I can’t smell a thing… my head not only hurts… my synusis are all stopped up… whatever that was I was drinking certainly had a sneaky kick to it….I felt like the walking dead….

Or maybe I was… and just didn’t know it yet…

I stagger to the door, or maybe I crawled… I don’t remember which…. and look around to get my bearings toward the well… I REALLY need to get a drink….

As my eyes sweep the compound, what do my blood-shot, bulging, hurting eyes behold??

The Shaman standing in the door of the hut across from mine….

    And…..

    And….

HE IS STILL BOMBED TOO!!!!! Oh man…. He is busily launching last night supper…

OOOhh I can’t watch this!! I start to hurl too….but hold it in…BARELY….

He sees me and waves at he….

I am stuned… was he really waving at ME??….

For those of you who have watched this posted story for the last few months...

    I thank you...

The fact that you are still "checking" the post tells me that I must have friends on the other end somewhere.....

The last two months have been a repeat of a comedy of errors.... My computer dies... I rebuild it and it dies again... I cannot afford the parts....

My brother-in-law dies... and I still don't have the parts.....and cannot comfort my wife of thirty years.... she must console herself with her work.... to my detrement.... but.... it works for her....

I have not wanted to do anything less.... sometimes life gets rough and grinds you underfoot....then I remember the things I went through in Vietnam... many..many of them were bad times.... and many were good times...and that always out-weights the bad crap....

I have a computer again, and my notes have been recovered... so... with your permission... I will attempt to continue this little story...

However... be warned!!... I told you early on that this story was one that started slow... and ends the same way... so... may patience visit you and yours....as I am sure that God visits us all...from time-to-time...

    ===================================

    I wave back… trying to be civil….at least… in-between short, fierce bouts of nausea…

Oh God.. he is coming over to me!…. I look around for a place to duck into, but there is nothing close… I just really don’t know how to handle this at all…..

He stops in the middle of the “street” for want of a better word and pukes… then continues toward me….

Now he is standing in front of me… talking at me… chattering is what I called it then… I have no clue as to what he is saying, but it sounds serious… maybe very serious…OH God… did I screw the wrong girl last night!! Or maybe the wrong wife of somebody.. or maybe ….Naaaaaahhhhhh--- don’t even consider an alternative !!!!!

After about ten minutes of this… with me nodding my head every now and then… he claps me on the shoulder and staggers off… BOY… is HE really drunk…..and I guess that I must be running a close second…

    I walk…

    no…. make that…

    I SPRINT for the out-house!!

After spending a really serious time making offerings to the local, mine and anyone else river god’s who wish to be given an offering…. I emerge to find Billy waiting for me…

“JHC Long… you sure know how to make things lively around here!!"

    "Waddia mean??"

"Evidently, you impressed him!!… Can’t say for sure how.. but he wants you to join his family for dinner this weekend.. The Capt say we all can… after we finish up some business at a village higher up the mountain… "

He laughs that ‘silly little girl’ laugh and I immediately cringe!!!! This guys laugh is SPOOKY!!

    And I feel better…………no…..make that…………

I sprint for the john again!!!!!! My river god will be happy tonight!!!

As the day wears on… Rundles & I have finished up several really good cuts and sent them out….we learn later in the day, that the cuts resulted in a couple of companies of NVA having a really bad day!!! And it stops them from coming to bear on the marines. I am sure they will just LOVE that… if they knew about it… they are too busy with the artillery that the bad guys are throwing at them… however, we learn that the Marine ARTY is decimating almost every small , mobile artillery group that fires on them…and a whole BUNCH of motor crews too!!

Night comes.. Rundles & I head down to our hooch and as the darkness closes in on us.. we can hear the fire-fight way off….. like a small engines droning away in the distance… low….methodical…. Almost a humming sound…. It lulls me to sleep in this horrid little corner of hell on earth….

The next few days are a repeat of the last one… except nobody is drunk…..or sick… we all feel surprisingly great!!… it is almost like there is no war up here… everyone is friendly…. Helpful and down-right charming (THAT is a word I try to avoid using as a man!!!… that is a chick word… but it fits the situation!!)

Billy says that the “family” is gathering for a feast soon… but it might be another week or two because the old shaman is down in the low-lands for some reason….I have come to find out that this old guy is a lot more than he seems… to this village, to the villages around us… and certainly to us…..to the U.S. that is…. We had a Marine Lt. Colonel come visit for a bit yesterday and he treated the shamans brother and family like royalty… well… maybe he is here….

A week has come & gone… everything is like working in a dreamworld… you get up, take care of business, go to work, eat, rest… no pressure.. Pleasant sounds (when you cannot here the valley that is) pleasant people… Humans!! Good conversation (If I could understand any of it!).. they are a good looking people…. I could get us to this….

Over the last week… the boy that I first met upon my arrival has …well… sort of become a ‘house-boy” for us.. he genuinely wants to hang around us.. and we, being good capitalists, make sure that he is properly compensated for it… but he acts like it might be an insult… I do not understand the culture here yet… I call him LONG and he beams back at me and says “LONG” right back at me…. I have four half-brothers back in the World… but none of them are Longs….. I may have glommed on to a little brother here…He seems to be picking up a little broken English, just a few words here and there.. I feel bad about that…. I have not had time to learn any of his language…..not even a few words…. Our interpreter does it all for us… even when we try to do it ourselves.. he is always interjecting himself into the conservation and making corrections.. oh well…. I guess that’s his job….

    Continuing........................

Along about 9PM or so, Billy comes in to our little piece of heaven and announces that there are TWO missions that need to go up to other villages tomorrow, and he wants me & Rundles to be RTO’s for the two groups….

“Hell yes!!” I was getting a little bored here anyway…. (If you CAN get bored in a combat zone!!) So we pack our rucks and settle in for a nice nap…

Which is over in a shot because the “Morning” here is about 3AM.... if that!!… Oh well.. it was refreshing and we are both ready to go…

No chop this time, we have to hoof-it this time…. So as the two teams are walking out of the village, we split up, we start west and the other team starts north.

“OK Billy… so how far away is this village??

He starts to laugh and then catches himself…. I think he is beginning to get the idea that his laugh always unnerves people.. “OH…. About two to three clicks give or take a click”….and the OTHERS giggle….

After about an hour, the Lt. in charge of this one …whom I did not know…..nor did I know his name… (these guys don’t wear nametags or use real names)….gave me a message to send…. So we stopped and took a break while I transmitted it…..

    “OK LT. no reply…”

    “OK…move out….

    And we start up again….

    Now…

This goes on for six hours fer chrips sake!!! March an hour, stop and send a message, get no reply and then move again….

Noon was coming up, and we stop yet again…. And send another message.

I have to tell you… all this message sending makes me nervous… the NVA have DF too (of a sorts) and it seems to me that all we were doing is laying down an electronic signature that, in my opinion, POINTED the way we were going on a map like a big red finger!! All they have to do is get ahead of us one hour and lay in wait!!

Billy assures me that that won’t happen….

    “Oh yeah!!?? Why???”

“’cause we’re here “ he says…. And sure as the sun rises out of the east, the village materialized right out of the late morning mists….

“Damn!! Where did that come from??”

And the radio squawks out… and I jot it down… the LT. looks at it and says..”Lets go.. they are waiting for us”

As we walk into the village, this one is not as grand as the one we have been at… but.. the same type of kids come out of the huts and stare at us, and the old women hang back but watch us very closely…..

Billy starts giggling again…. He new the joke…. Three clicks my pa-toot…because the “clicks” were ALL UPHILL…. It felt more like fifteen clicks to me….

    Continuing..........

Well… all I have to do is sit… monitor the radio and sleep if I feel like it… the team is doing their thing…

The Tooth-fairies are busy examining anyone and everyone that comes into the village…and I am told that we may be here for about two days at the most.

A couple of us find a quiet spot just at the edge of the village and set up a quick-camp…. Billy and one of the others take a brief stroll around the village to get the lay-of-the-land and report as to what they think the situation in the area is….

All quiet and signs seem to indicate that this village has been untouched by all of the small NVA teams that have been making the rounds in villages to the north and east of us….that news makes me wonder how Rundles is doing…. He went north…..

I hear low rumbles at night. All of them coming from the north… the flashes in the distance are not lightning. It dawns on me… that Rundles and I have not been apart for close to thirty months now… School, then Vint-Hill, then Panama and now here….Damn!! I realize that he is like a brother to me….. the only person in VN that I feel that way about….I know that I have to put that worry, that thought, out of my mind… it doesn’t do a person too much good to worry about anyone’s ass but your own……. But….I guess I do…..

Two days go by, and we are moving to another village now. I learn that this type of mission is like a circuit judge, traveling from one village to the next in a big circle, or in our case, a zigzag line around these few mountains. It is always the same, the kids greet us, we get fed, shown were to sleep and the Tooth-fairies do their thing. All I do is send messages and monitor the radio.

This village is having a little “festival” tonight. They are going to slaughter a water buffalo for the feast in our Tooth-fairies
    honor… That should be interesting…

We perform the same duties that we did in the last village….a brief stroll… and then settle in while the Tooth-fairies are working….

They seem to be the absolute center of the universe for these people….they are greeted everywhere they go with smiles, laughter, and honors… the villagers give them almost anything they can.. food, drink, chickens, pigs, tobacco or maybe weed, I don’t know. They always feed them first and always include them in their local ceremonies.

I begin to see these people with a new wonder… I am a young man… but their simple and straight forward lives and ways of doing things attracts me… the children always try to include you in their games, tag, hide and seek, you know… all the childrens games you played when growing up…. You find yourself wishing to return to that age.. carefree… a child…. No worries…

The guys tell me later, that the festival was really neat, but I have to leave before it started….some other SF dudes came into the village during the evening meal and conferred with the team leader… I am asked to go because the need an RTO bad….so we leave just before dusk….

I have no idea what is going on or what I just volunteered for.. but ..I know that I can do the job, so here I go…. traipsing off into the night again…

Yet again… the last few days were beginning to bore me… just a little… or maybe I was getting too use to the children …..

The low rumbles I have been hearing for the last few nights… is getting closer….we are traveling northeast… we have crossed of two rivers and on small hill range and begin descending into a rather long valley.

Even in the darkness, with no moon, the stars light our way.. and these guys know where they are going…. Or they don’t… I have to trust in them….

We have been moving for about six hours now… it is midnight or a short time after…..

All the nighttime sounds stop very very suddenly

    Shit… We halt……

I can’t see what is going on up front… they seems to be talking with someone… I have been travelling second from the back.

    A hand signal… and we move forward…. And enter into a large clearing… a village….

Or what use to be a village… this one has been burned out…. Bodies everywhere… all villagers…

    And ..

    OH God no!…

Two rows of bodies lie on the main street… one row is all women and old people…

    The other……Americans….

We deploy in combat pattern…. I stay with the team leader and we are joined by two officers….not tooth-fairies.. these guys are pure unadulterated SF…..

I am handed a message to transmit… I encrypt it as quickly as I can and start sending it out. I was ordered to use Morse and NOT voice. While I am tap-tap-tapping out this message on my leg key, I become aware that we have been joined by more SF… coming in from three different routes….”we seem to be almost fifty guys now” I sort of say to no one

The Lt. next to me says, very quietly “fifty-four now with fifty or so more by day-break, and, with luck, more before this is over”.

“when this is over” I say to myself… I have heard those words before… and they SUCK…..

“So… just exactly what is going on?”…..

“we are going hunting, Sgt. and you are an invited guest…..weather you like it or not”….

    “Gee…. Thanks a whole bunch”

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was briefed later as to what the situation is…seems that those low rumbles I heard at night was, indeed, several NVA teams “making the rounds” of some friendly villages… they were mortaring them and killing the headmen, the Shaman and anyone else they could.. Evidently, they also got a few of the young men and press-ganged them into becoming NVA/VC… I won’t go into what they did and are doing with the young women….

The children were herded off and hidden.. luckily.. by a few of the old women….who got out in time….

“Two teams will be moving south with the children” .. they are being sent back to the villages that we just came from… they have relatives there….

One of the messages decrypts to “ 30 or 40 NVA to your northwest…approx 20 clicks... Moving easterly… intercept NLT 0600 hrs…blocking (force) will be in place by 0300 hrs….no air, no ARTY avail…out

Damn!! Twenty clicks out…. How the hell can we get to them on time??

“well….” Says the Lt…. we will just have to hurry then won’t we?’’ he laughs a low laugh and flashes a very broad , toothy, white smile!!..

I think, just then, that he shouldn’t smile at night…. He glows in the dark!

The entire group starts moving as one, with only one hand signal given… hell… even us air-droppables don’t so that well…

We are almost running… not quit, but a very fast pace none the less….I start to think that this may be a long run…

At about three of fours miles out, a halt is called….

“No smokes, water only” comes the word….

There are a lot of guys around me in the dark, and I’ll be damned if I can see them or hear them….

“hey Lt” and he comes over to me… “are we going to run the entire way?”

    “hell yes.. why?”

“because .. with your permission, I think I can fix that”

    “how?”

“I am from an air-mobile unit…. Not all that far away… our rotor guys can’t stand not to fly.. and if given the chance to fly at night, in a hail-storm with no JP-4.. they will do it!”…. just give me ten minutes to find out”

    “OK.. ten minutes”

I switch freqs and give my call id… after three tries. I hear a familiar voice…

“Tiger?… you there?? ”what the hell do you want Tiger”…

“Alpha…….Fox… is that you” I query

    “Alpha…….go head”

“Roger……………a ride… several of them… enough for a hundred supreme green ones”

    “Wait”……………….

    “Tiger………….Authenticate this………86355…………….. “

    “I authenticate…..99121 over”

    “wait…………”

    “OK tiger.. send coords”

And I send the encrypted coordinates as fast as I can….

And after what seemed to be a very long wait….

“Can do…. Be at”…. and he send encrypted our pick-up point”

Which, as it turned out, was only four more miles away….

I inform the Lt. and he confers with others….

    “HOT DAMN A RIDE!!”

Everyone’s spirits are looking up now… instead of having to worry about making the contact point by the time frame required… they were going to be “Johnny-on-the-spot” well before the time, and maybe get some sleep to boot!

As we moved out…. A much happier group…. Rumbles coming from the north reached our ears…..

As we move toward our new destination, the Lt. and the Capt. both ask how I did that… they could not get even ONE chop from their people…. Every one of their chops was committed….

“Gee Sirs…. As an Air-Mobile unit, and having just recently been designated as such… we got a zillion chops… of all sorts.. Sitting in ten or twelve different places… and most of the time… they are not doing anything except minor missions….these guys are always beggin for work to do… and at night or in the rain.. Hell.. they would fly up-side-down if they could!”

They don’t answer or say anything… but I can see the wheels turning in their heads….

Time passes…. Our out guards have seen or heard nothing… we are making good time… but my ass is tired already….and the only thing that is in our favor on this “walk” is that the temperatures at night are much cooler than a few days ago….the monsoons must be coming…..

A halt is called… we are getting close to our pick-up point……. And we are gathered together for an “approach briefing”… must be something the green guys do… I have never done that before….

“There is a large field just a few hundred yards ahead…. The point men have secured the other side… we will move in four columns…..RTO & Tooth-fairies in the middle”

I can hear the chops coming… fast from the east… can’t see them… but sounds like there are only two of them.. I think to myself. “damn… they must have misunderstood me!”

We begin moving forward, fast as we can…. I can see shadows to the left and right of me… and several more out to the front…

The radio crackles in my headsets “Tiger… Tiger…..”

“I answer…”Burning bright” (OK… I know it sounds corny, but, damnit, that was the ways we did things at that time)

    “This is Lancelot…..”

“Roger Lancelot… ground flare is what color??”

    “yellow”

“roger that, yellow it is….red starts now”… the guys started two to four red ground flares to outline the landing area…

and before I knew it about eighteen Hueys were upon us!!

The field was alive with them!!

The noise level went up a hundred fold.

Everybody was on the move to load up and get out of there….

I found a seat and strapped in… as the chop lurched up… I could see that all was air-borne….no ground fire… no nothing…

    We did it!!

    A night extraction without a fire-fight!!!

The chops swung low and to the east… at full speed… I thought to myself… “yeah.. our rotor guys are having a ball with this!!”

I hear the Lt. yell at the Capt. “WE’RE GOING TO MAKE IT ON TIME!!”

    “YEAH!... THANKS TO THE 101st!"

I ask “WILL WE GET THERE BEFORE THE BLOCKING FORCE??”

    They are laughing….

    OK… that makes me nervous…

“HELL SGT…..WE ARE THE BLOCKING FORCE, THAT WAS SAID TO THROW ANYONE WHO WAS LISTENING OFF THE SCENT”

    Ok…now…. I really AM nervous…..

And…. it looks like I am going to miss that weekend dinner appointment….

    Ya Think??

It does not take very long to get close to where the green guys want to be…

We are dropped about two miles from the interdiction site and after checking gear, everyone takes on extra mags and ammo.

    Water is checked.

    Billy comes up…

“Hey!!! First time I have seen you in awhile!”

“And you expected me to be somewhere else Billy?” I am kinda a captive audience at the moment now ain’t I?”

He laughs, but it is not that little girl laugh…. Is he changing?

As we “idle time talk”, we continue to prepare for the “walk”. I expect to have to do a two mile run soon…. I never did look forward to running at all….Not at all..

As I look around, I can see many guys around me…. I can’t really count how many, but it looks like more that the fifty or sixth we started with.

    “Hey Billy, what’s our count?”

“Well…… Y’all know we started our pitiful small.. but I rekon we go about sixty-five in this batch”

    “Batch??… waddia mean Batch”?

“Well, Hell Long… while we were in the air, seems we got two platoons from one of our larger LZ’s and six or seven other teams got picked up on the way…. You got us more chops than we could in three days……We got neigh on to two hundred strung out… the bad guys are gonna get a real su-prise soon!!”

And he DOES his little girl giggle…. This time it fits!!!!

Someone comes out of the darkness and says “Hey…Long!!”

“Damn Rundles.. where you been?, good to see you buddy!”

”I heard you came from that little village on the side of the hill? (I cannot remember its name) that’s where I was when they started in on us….we have been following behind them for … Oh… maybe sixteen or seventeen hours now… we couldn’t get chops nor ARTY support, so the village took a good hit….but, we showed them a good time and they left….. but we heard they have hit several more small villages on their way out of our area.….I also understand that we have you to thank for the chops?.. I wouldn’t have thought of that”

“Yes you would have… once you got tired hoofing it! And you know how I hate to run!”

A green guy officer comes up…. A Major….. "I need you RTO’s to come with me”

    And we follow him……………….

what?….. you expected us to say no?

A bunch of them were having a little Pow-wow…. Most likely about the coming contact….

Three groups are moving toward the blocking site…. Evidently, there are about thirty green guys already there! I am to go with group one, who are going to use the chops to get behind them… and then try to drive them into the others.

Rundles will stay with group three, they are the reserve force. The other groups have already moved out.. Kinda had to tell in the darkness. The weather is on our side, the moon is not out and clouds have started to obscure the stars…. It gets very very dark. And I speculate the it must be about two-thirty AM, I seem to have lost my watch somewhere along the way.

I say bye to Rundles and Billy and head for the chop I have been assigned too. Within minutes, we are airborne again and swinging south. We will swing south and then west and come up behind them…. The idea is to LET them know we are behind them so they will move easterly.

I settle back and try to relax…

    My body…

    My mind….

    My bowels!!
