A short story. I have always been a supporter of the right of any man or woman to keep and bear arms for sport and self defense and I was really puzzled at how low some american congressmen can go to add a vote. Living in Venezuela for over forty years I learned that in a country with vast uninhabited territories, a handgun, a rifle or a shotgun were as important as drinking water. This tradition goes back to the 15th or 16th centuries. Until now law abiding people bear guns openly or slightly covered by a light coat or guayabera. Licenses are relatively easy to obtain if you don't have a legal record of violence. In other words we have the nod of the goverment. But a few years ago, the president declared on TV that it would not be a crime for a man to rob if he needs money to feed his family. Well that declaration unleashed the devil of violence. If it were for food may be some would tolerate it. From nowhere, favela and slum bullies took over the cities. According to goverment speakers, 14.000 thousand people were murdered in 2010. More than 95 % en the hand of bands; the most tragic fact is that the overwhelming majority of the dead come from the poorest levels of the population. In a population of around 22 million, there are over 7 million firearms. The situation is so desperate and life so cheap, that hoodlums would present at a party or picnic and shoot all the presents. In the funeral of one of those animals, members of a rival band took over the funeral parlor, shot again the body y the casket plus five or six of the mourners. The constitution, here declares that the government has the duty to protect peoples propery and physical integrity, some kind of Utopia and I believe it applies in the U.S. "You can't find a policeman when You need him" or "the police always are late". Unless governments take seriously their duties to protect You and me and effectively do it, we should not even worry about what a politician declares or how others distort The Constitution and the Law. They should go after the criminal. The first wars were fought with sticks and stones not firearms; I don't need a license to protect my family and my property. after being a Lawyer for almost forty years, I am convinced that Natural Law that have protected us since birth, is the fairest ever. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
