A man I was set up beside at the local gun show this weekend had a DCM Remington 03 MFG date 1942 with all matching serial number's with the DCM box that he was asking 850.00 for.He said he would sell it to me for 700.00.Not knowing anything about 03's is this over priced? It has the straight stock with just a few dings in the stock, mirror bore and 95% metal finish. Thanks Benny

If he's trying to sell a Remington 03 @ $850.00, he's trying to pull the wool over someone's eyes. Looks like he's trying to double his investment.

Ah, but is there not a difference between a "DCM" Military
firearm and a "CMP" Military rifle?

I believe the DCM's bring a much higher premium than the CMP's.

Someone else will have to clarify with the details in differences
between the two, and or why, but I've read this awhile back
somewhere, but I'm not sure as to the validity of it.

Okay, here's what I can tell you. If it was a 03A3 it is most likely worth more than an 03. If everything matches (like all Remington, or Springfield, or Smith Corona) then it's worth more. Quite a few 03's were rebarreled and/or refurbished for WWII but they are still 03's and not the later 03A3's.

Still high value for one in excellent condition isn't more than $600 at the most - and that depends on where you are (that's for a very nice 03A3 - with good parkerizing and the like).

For an 03 - well many don't care for them as well because they don't have the peep sight and also because the barrels with low numbers were not heat treated correctly and therefore are not as safe. High on them probably no more than $500 or thereabouts for one in good condition.

So yep he's robbing you blind at $700.

Oh and just so you'll know if it was made in 1942 it's an 03A3 most likely - they had changed over from the 03's by then.

    TAC -

There is no material difference between the CMP and the DCM. CMP is merely a new name for the DCM. Mission and goals of the CMP are the same as they were for the DCM. In 1996 (think who was President then, and you'll understand why) the DCM was abolished, and CMP responsibility was transferred to the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety Inc., a civilian agency under government mandate and contract much like the Post Office. At the same time, they became self funded (no more tax dollars) so the price of rifles increased shortly thereafter.

What did not change was the mission of CMP: to promote marksmanship of all types by supplying civilians with government surplus rifles and ammunition to practice with. In the beginning, the only rifles available were 1903 Springfields, and later, M-1 Garands. The CMP now sells not only Garands, but .22 rifles (Mossberg and Kimber), and they have recently found a limited supply of 1903 and 1903A3 Springfields, as well as parts (M-1, M-1 carbine, M-14 and others.) You can also purchase surplus, new, or re-manufactured .30-06, .30 carbine, 7.62mm (.30 , 5.56mm, .22 caliber, and airgun ammunition, and other related accessories like books and videos.
