Ok folks, I have decided that I want a 1903 Springfield. Not being a Springfield expert, I need help. I know about the low serial number range and some of the history, but not much else. I looked at a couple in the $650.00 range at a gun show today. I figured the price to be a bit high because they were dealer guns, but really dont know what they are worth. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you looking to spend? And how good a condition are you expecting for the amount you want to dish out?

I ask because I do have two Springfield 03's. Oh and are you looking for the original '03 or the 03A3?

Excellent questions. Not too concerned about the money as long as I dont get ripped. I really dont know the differences between the 03, and the 03A3. Im trying to research that right now, but I know you guys can teach me alot. As always, I want VG to excellent condition.

Well you most likely won't get a Excellent condition or even a VG for under $500-$750 all things depending. In regards to the '03's you'll need a high serial number - preferably over 800,000. The '03's were basically made by Springfield, the 03A3's were made by Springfield, Remington, Smith-Corona and dang if I can remember the other one. The 03's had the ladder sight, the 03A3's had peep sights - oh and the list goes on.

As "T" says, the 1903 Springfield was made from machined parts, had a detachable floor plate and a ladder sight mounted on the barrel ahead of the receiver. Some, but not many, were made after 1940 from leftover parts.

When the British evacuated Dunkqurke (sp) in 1940, they had need to rearm their army and appealed to the US for aid. Along with thousands of privately owned firearms being shipped to them, the US contracted with Remington to produce the rifles on the tools left over from Springfield. The Remington engineers saw ways to lessen production efforts and costs by replacing many of the machined pieces with stamped ones. The ladder sight was replaced by a wing protected peep sight on the rear of the receiver for better sighting. The barrel was mostly produced in a 2 groove configuration, rather than a 4 groove, after tests confirmed the 2 groove was as accurate as the 4 groove. With the entry of the US into WWII, the 1903a3 was issued to American troops until sufficient production of the M1 Garand replaced it. The 1903a3 continued service with home guard units, while the 1903a4 became the "sniper" rifle issued to the troops in combat.
