Can anyone educate me as to the differences between a 300 savage bullet and a 300 win mag bullet? I'm curious because I have a remington 760 that I've always shot 300 savage out of... can this shoot 300 win mags safely? I'm not sure what the difference is?

    Thanks

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two cartridges are not in the same league at all. Firstly, the 300 Win Mag cartridge will not fit into the 300 Savage gun's chamber. Secondly, even if it would, the pressures for the 300 Win Mag are WAY, WAY too high for a gun of the design of the lever action Savage Model 99 or a Remington 760 chambered for the 300 Savage.

Only shoot the ammo stamped on the barrel of your gun in your gun. Anything else either will not fit or is dangerous to shoot in the gun. If you don't follow that rule then the gun and/or you will be harmed, significantly.

    SAFETY FIRST!

That's what I thought... The guy at the local sporting goods store didn't have any 300 savage bullets left and he sold me the 300 winmags and said they would work... I didn't think they would. I'm sitting here at work thinking about it and thought I would ask. I was going to be heading home to double check my rifle tonight.. Can't find the 300 savage bullets anywhere! ugh. I've got 4 left and deer season starts on Saturday!!

    Thanks for the quick response.

It absolutely amazes me that gun store owners hire no-nothing sales people like the guy at your gun store.

Nah, that ain't it. Lots of calibers start with 3. But these are both 300. Oughta work.

At least this one won't fit. Could have gone the other way, and the Savage rounds might have fired in the Winchester chamber. Bad juju. I've heard of moronic gun store clerks giving folks 270 Winchester to shoot in their 270 Weatherby, and other horror stories.

Where do you live? I only ask because if you are in a remote-ish area you might want to go on a road trip to a big store like cabelas or whatever. If there is a walmart or something like that near you see if they can order it for you. But no, they don't interchange.
