My dad gave me this gun for my 16th birthday,[over 30 years ago] so I could deer hunt with him. It has a 4 digit serial # and is in excellent condition with all blueing there and no damage on stock. Last time it was used was 1991. It was cleaned, put back in it's case and hasn't been used since. How can I find what year it was made and what it's worth? P.S. I got 2 big doe's with it back then, both with 1 shot at about 100yds. Thank's, Jeff.
Your Model 88 is a pre-'64.....in fact, a four digit serial # would put it in the first year of manufacture, 1955. (Ser. # 1-18378)
Blue Book value:
Model 88 Rifle (1955-1963 Mfg.) in .308 Win. :
98% - $925
95% - $675
90% - $550
80% - $450
That's a real nice rifle, and being in the nice condition it is.....and especially since it was a birthday gift from your dad....I hope you're going to hang on to it!
88s are fine rifles. Have had all four calibres of 88 and 100. In 358 I'd fight you for it! 308s are most common. Local shop has an 88 and a 100 in 308. I'd rate them at 80%. One has an old K4, one is open sighted. Price is $425 on each.
I have my grandfather's Savage, model 300, manfactured 1028. It is in good condition (my rating of a 6 out of possible 10). Please give a suggestion of possible value - probably as a collectors item.
I have a Savage, Model 99, 300, manfactured 1928, that is in good condition (6 of possible 10). Owned originally by my grandfather. What is it possibly worth - probably as a collector's item.
What is the possible range of value of a Winchester, Lever action, model 1873. It is a 24 inch hexagan barrel, cal. 38, with the following inscription on the barrel. "Kings improvement patent Mar 29,1866 Oct 18,1860". Where on the gun can I find the serial number? The stock is good, with dents from use, and the metal has lost most of it's blueing.
I assume you mean it is in .300 Savage caliber as I can't find any "300" model or variation of the Savage 99 or 1899. We need pictures and more details as to markings.
Same on the Winchester 73. Values on those range from a few hundred to several thousand. We need pictures and any other info you have, including the serial number (which is on the bottom tang, behind the lever). The octagon 24" barrel was standard on rifles.
If the Model 88 has a K4 Weaver on it - it is not in original condition because it has holes drilled into the receiver.
If my mind is working right today, the first ones were not drilled and tapped for a scope. I had one - 6464 and I sold it 8 years ago for $500.00 - with two boxes of shells.
A hunting rifle is more of a collectors item then what it is a gun collectors item.
People who likes to shoot a model 88 or likes to hunt with a model 88 or likes to collect model 88 - doesn't care what condition it is in. Just that it shoots.
The gun I sold - foolishly for $500 was later sold again for $1000 and that person sold it for $1500.00 and it is still out there.

I saw two Winchester '73 on a gun rack last month at the local gun shop.
One they wanted $2000 and the other they wanted $3000.00
Depends on caliber and model and grade.....
Gamemaster,
The Mod 88 came drilled for scope mounts. I bought mine new in the fifties and mounted a Weaver K 2.5 (Minnesota heavy brush country). It accounted for many deer over the years. Still have the box it came in with hanging tags.
that's the trouble will tack ons. From the original posting on a Winchester 88, it has gone from that to a Savage 300, a AR-15 and now back to the original 2 year post of the 88.
