38 smith and wesson pre mod. 10?

    have old model S&W nickel plated,5 screw,pin in barrel,half moon front sight,38 S.&W.special ctg on right side of barrel, smith & wesson on left side
    smith and wesson springfield,mass.usa
    patented feb.8,08,sept 14,08 dec.29,14 on top of barrel ser.#236612 seems to be tight ,timing good. Any info appreciated, ie.age,ok to shoot modern ammo, ect. Thanks,Shorty123

    yes it's safe to use modern ammo but i'd stay away from the +P stuff

    The gun is the .38 Hand Ejector, Military & Police Model of 1905, Third Change; serial numbers 146900-241703 were made 1909-1915. Your gun was made in the latter year.

    FWIW, that gun does not have a hammer block safety, so a hard enough blow on the hammer can fire the round under the hammer. Note that contrary to some reports, it takes a lot of force to do that, unlike some revolvers with the hammer down on a primer or the sear in the safety notch. In those S&W's the blow has to be hard enough to either crush the rebound slide or shear the hammer pin.
