Would like to hear opinions on the .38 Super as a self defense round.

The Super will work well for defense. It's hotter than a 9mm.

    Any thoughts on overpenetration?

I've always wanted a .38 Super just for fun...I dont know about personal defense, but personal satisfaction would be excuse enough. :D

Maybe the question should had been, why the Super has not gained much popularity? I know it is more than apt as a self defense round .

I've always loved the 9X23. It's hot and yet easy to handle on a 1911 frame and if memory serves, it is more better than the 38sup.
    3cents worth

It is a better round than +P or +P+ 9mm!
