I use to carry a XD subcompact 40 in a Comp-Tac MTAC holster. The short 9 round mag would be in the gun and the extended 12 round mag would be in a nylon with velcro flap holster. I would certainly add this to your list of options.
The S&W Shield in 40 is thin and doesn't eat much space, yet offers enough grip to shoot. The general claim I hear is by the 2nd or 3rd mag you are ready to quit from soreness in the palm.
None. But I'm an old fart. I bought a Glock 27 and qualified with it. After 150 rounds I was no longer having fun. Moved to a lone wolf barrel and made it a 9mm. Now it's fun to shoot. As far as concealed carrying and defense I find the nine has a faster, more accurate, 2nd, and third shot. I've trained myself to do triple taps, so yea a .40 would be more devastating, but I've been to a bunch of autopsies caused by .22s.
My granddaughters husband is a new cop. His carry pistol is a Glock 40 and he just bought a shield 40 for his C C and back up. It makes sense for a cop to do this. Not sure for others. The jury is still out on how he is going to like the Shield. I will ask him in 6 months. My C C has been a Walther PPKs 380 and has been for 30 years. I am seriously considering going to a lighter, thinner pistol.
Now some are probably asking "Why go back to the 80's & 90's for a daily carry?"
Because the new ones didn't get the message that a small .40 needs weight,
and thick rubber grips, otherwise they punish the heck out of the shooter...
the two above pistols handle .40S&W with EASE!
Benefits to being a geezer, you remember what works
I carry a Glock 27 in winter and a M&P 40 Shield in summer. Both are of similar size and loaded weight with the Shield thinner in width yet greater in height.
Each is easily concealable, reliable, and accurate and handles all brands, types and weights of .40 S&W ammunition without difficulty.
Neither is a recreational target pistol. Thus, recoil is manageable and not painful as quantites of ammunition sent downrange during practice is far less than that shot from recreational target sidearms.
now I just carry the bond derringer with .410 000 buckshot and 2 extra .410 and 2 .45 colt in my knife case
