If a .45 is considered big and slow and the 9mm small and fast, what is the 44Mag considered?

    ...overkill...? :D

Just kidding! The .44Mag is an excellent cartridge for hunting or defense against bigger dangerous critters. Big, fast, & lotsa knockdown power as long as you can put the bullets where you intend to.

41 magnum? Big and fast. Big is 40 or over. Fast is 1000 or over. 38 special is small and slow. 357 is small and fast. Actually pretty simple.

    Just about perfect... :D

That's another one of them oddball rounds that used to be hard to find ammo for but now it's one of the few calibers that you still see on the shelves! ;)

All three are excellent calibers for their intended use. Some have just been around longer than the others.

Versatile. I deer hunt with a 180gr 44mag load that is advertised @2000fps out of a rifle and I load a 240 LSWC @ 800fps. Then you got guys who shoot 300gr cast loads that could stop an elephant. Sure there are bigger and badder cartridges out there, under a 100yds. the 44mag can do it all.

I would consider it an absolute mainstay in any hunters arsenal. capable of killing deer at 100 yds and portable enough to carry on your hip. Yet if an angry grizzly crosses your path, a couple to the skull should do the trick, downloaded it makes a fine plinker and small game getter, loaded with snake shot it will give a snake a bad day. I primarily use mine to kill hogs and look cool at the range. Its a fun set up. I wish I coulda known elmer kieth...

The 44mag is just about right. My number one choice would by my 460 SW Magnum but the ammo is expensive... the brass is expensive...the bullets are expensive.... etc etc etc

I just managed to buy a nice quantity of 9mm and the CZ i bought has a nice little bark to it so that is where my attention is at the moment.
