Any thoughts on this gun? Am considering either it, or a S&W Model 629 Mountain Gun. I know the S&W would be a whole lot easier carrying, but I like that big 480 also.

The gun would be mostly for "bench" shooting, but occasionaly a few horse back trips into the local hills.

    Opinions?

Nighthawk, I too am a big fan of big calibers. I hope someone can give some input on this caliber. How many choices do we have as far as reloading? If the caliber does pan out, I think the 629 mountain gun would be perfect for self defense on youre pack trips. How about recoil ?
GOOD LUCK AND GOOD SHOOTING !!!!!!

NH, if your looking for the best....you might look at this one.

    Alpine .500

Built on a Ruger Super RedHawk, by "Bowen`s

    Chambered in .500 Linebaugh, 435gr LFN @ 1,250fps or
400 JHP @1,350fps....this is from a four inch barrel!

Your base gun plus $1300.....$100 extra for stainless. Slicked action and will dispatch the meanest bitey/scratchy things. Five shooter. LTS

I prefer the .475 Linebaugh over the .500. Better penetration.

Also available in .454 and .50AE for the weaker. They are a little pricey.....but it is a custom all the way. Just food for thought.

the taurus revolvers come in 44 magnum,454 casull, and 480 ruger.
they are priced in the $600 range.
maybe rent one from the range and let us know what you think of them.
I have the de 50 ae,and its expensive to shoot, about 35 cents each round if you reload the casings.this is one fact I missed in purchasing the de.
what do you guys figure it costs per round for the 454 and 480?

takes the same amount of time to reload 50 ae as it does to reload 9mm.
but the 50 makes a much nicer report.
guess I'm stickin to the cannon sticks.

Have you considerered the Ruger SRH in .454 Casull? It will also shoot .45LC for when you want to just "plink". It can be uploaded, scoped and be a real badass hand cannon from the bench rest with a 91/2" bbl. Check it out on the Ruger web page at www.ruger-firearms.com/rvlarge.html

A freind of mine has a .480. The recoil is not near as bad as it sounds. I was dissapointed at the penetration when shooting at old cars.
Ignorance is a crime in 49 states. In the other one it is bliss.

LOL, Soooo...Don't buy the 480 for shooting cars?

I have heard good reports from online friends about their 480 SRH. I like the new Taurus guns, but I would not buy a big bore revolver from them. The Ruger is not over priced and would last forever. I am certain the resale would be fair if you did not like it.
So he cocked both his pistols, spit in the dirt, and walked out in to the street.
